Wine of the Week: 5/20/13 - 2009 Florian Beck-Hartweg - "Cuvee Prestige" Riesling

2009 FLORIAN BECK-HARTWEG - "PRESTIGE CUVEE" RIESLING
ALSACE, FRANCE

We love Alsace for the unique flavors and quality coming from this region. This wine is a perfect example that you can have FANTASTIC FRENCH WINES at affordable prices. The folks at Florian Beck-Hartweg, share the philosophy that great wines aren't made in the cellar but in vineyards. That wines are only as good as the vintage that produced them…they only give mother nature a helping hand through fermentation and aging. They use oak casks that don't interfere in any way with the taste of the wine (casks are 100 years old or so!). They also believe in absolutely no fertilization (chemical or organic. Beck-Hartweg maintains that if the soil is healthy, microorganisms are able to give to the vineyard what it needs. This fantastic DRY Riesling is delightful in that minerals and acidity are artfully integrated into lovely notes of stone fruit and honesyckle blossoms. We could swear we tasted kiwi in this wine, and the finish? Well as expected, is lengthy with flinty minerality.

The local farmer markets are brimming with asparagus and/or artichokes…if you like those, like yours truly…get some Florian-Beck – Riesling to pair with it. This wine is affordable and delicious.
