MAY WINE CLUB WINES!
by S. VALENTE
2007 EPONYMOUS – RED BLEND – SONOMA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
In shopping for wines for our wine club members, we are always on the lookout for great wines at fantastic deals. This wine, dear wine club members, fits the bill! First let us tell you why this wine is named Eponymous; the dictionary describes it as something or someone who is named after something or someone. The reason for using it as the winery name is that the owner of the winery is Mr. Robert Pepi, whose family has been making highly acclaimed wines in the Sonoma Valley since 1966. He currently consults for many, many high end wineries around the world and is not allowed to use his name as a brand, thus the name Eponymous. Now about the wine, this vintage of Eponymous Red is the fifth vintage and Robert Pepi considers it his best, the last three have received at least 90 points from most wine critics. This blend is made up of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot. Give this wine about an hour to breathe before consuming. You’ll see it open up to beautiful, complex aromas hinting of cassis, spicy oak notes, orange peel, slight camphor, raspberries, and hints of vanilla and cloves as it opens. The palate will be treated to burst of raspberries, blackberries, cherries, silky tannins; a truly seamless blend. Shop around for this wine online and you’ll see why we are so pleased to bring you this as your primary red wine, and at your wine club member discount during the month of May, your cost is only $30.59 plus tax. We only have limited amounts of this wine, so go ahead open this gorgeous blend and hurry back to the store for more. Enjoy with a steak, BBQ, pizza and even meat sauce over pasta.
2007 POPE VALLEY – CHENIN BLANC “MEYERCAMP RANCH” – NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 by Ed Haus. The winery is a showcase of 19th century winemaking technology; the main building - situated on top of the Haus Creek that meanders through the property to conserve usable land - rises three stories against a hillside so as to use gravity to move the wine from stemmer/crusher to press to barrel. The winery is built into the hillside to create cave-like cool temperatures and higher humidity for the bottom barrel room. Also on the property is the original homestead family house, and a blacksmiths workshop with century-old equipment inside. A true trip through time. They hand-craft wines from their estate vineyards, planted as far back as 1940. The fruit for this wine comes from vines planted in 1948. The fruit is harvested at first light and whole cluster pressed to tank. The juice is then barrel fermented and aged for 8 moths in neutral French oak barrels. About 30% of the wine goes through Malolactic fermentation to round out the acid and add another layer of complexity to this wine. You will enjoy mineral notes, honey, and even little hints of peach on the nose. The palate is full of creamy honey notes, alongside of peach pit, pear and a lovely finish. Perfect Spring weather wine. Only 360 cases produced. Enjoy this wine with a light fish sautéed with butter and lemon.

2005 DOMAINE DE CABASSE – “SEGURET” COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES – RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE
A short while ago, many of you were here to sample wines from one of our favorite vendors, “Imported Heritage”, and you got to meet Claire Barroy, who owns and manages all aspects of her business. She often travels to France to meet winemakers and hand-select the wines she brings to us. Claire discovered this wine in her most recent trip to the Rhone Valley, where she met Nicolas Haeni, a young and genuine wine maker, who is also a grape grower. Nicolas believes that his personal challenge is to preserve the character of the wines while keeping the traditions and integrating new technologies into the work process and to produce extremely high quality grapes that lead to elegant, well-balanced complex wines characteristic of the terroir. We think he did in this blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah, all aged in French oak barrels for 20 months. Intensive, blue red shimmering color. Aromas of red and black fruits, pepper, and a roasted scent. Beautifully round, balanced, with a fantastic, elegant finish. Wine Spectator recently rated it at 90 points in their June 30, 2009 issue. Only 800 cases were produced and even less imported into the US. So enjoy this red beauty with roasted chicken, lighter beef dishes, and even ratatouille. Be sure to give this wine at least 45 minutes to breathe.

2009 2008 ALEXANDER FONTEIN – SAUVIGNON BLANC – DARLING, SOUTH AFRICA
Chenin Blanc is synonymous with the South African wine industry. Throughout South African history, you can find paintings with images of Sauvignon Blanc plantings, telling us that South Africa has ideal conditions for growing this grape. Luckily for us, Alexander Fontein planted theirs on such ideal terroir; cool climate with high altitude and in close proximity to the sea. This winery is family run and imports in small quantities to the US. This is a generous wine replete with fruit aromas, with guava and even a touch of pepper. Smooth and well balanced with a long and rewarding aftertaste. Made with 100% handpicked Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with plenty of natural acidity in the juice and showing strong varietal character. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to ensure freshness in the wine and on the palate. Refreshing and lively, sure to please! Be sure to enjoy this wine as an appetizer, with lightly seasoned grilled fish, or your favorite vinaigrette salad.
