2014 GIORNATA – “LUNA MATA VINEYARD” SANGIOVESE – CERTIFIED ORGANIC FARMING

ADELAIDA AVA - PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA

Our primary red wine for this month is a true story of determination and passion. This small production winery is located in Paso Robles, owned by Stephanie and Brian Terrizzi. Brian and Stephanie both have a love of wine that not only brought them to each other but also inspired them to grow Italian varietals in Paso Robles. Brian trained with Rosenblum cellars, worked in Italy, and in the process of expanding his education, he met Stephanie who was studying enology in Fresno, and got married. During their honeymoon in Italy, they traveled to the big wine regions where the inspiration and determination to use Italian grapes in California grew. Upon their return to California, they began the project of making Italian wines in Paso, where many winemakers discouraged them from their endeavor. But they persisted and found out that by picking grapes a bit earlier during harvest and by gentle handling in the cellar, they could produce wines worthy of an Italian dinner table. This wine is an example of what they have achieved. This wine is made with 100% organically-farmed Brunello clones of Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso), fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. This age-worthy Sangiovese, it has dusty notes of tobacco, leather, and red cherry. Structured tannins and acidity envelop the palate, calling for a serious meal to put it in its place and complement the unreserved nature of its youth. Comfort wine that’s perfect with grilled meats and rustic Tuscan ragus, pizza night? This wine is your wine.Only 200 cases produced! $25.00

2016 DOMAINE ALLIMANT-LAUGNER - SYLVANER

ALSACE, FRANCE

NO OAK

The Allimant-Laugner winery has been around since the 1600s and it produces wines from noble grapes from the well-regarded Alsace region of France. The original building is still standing today and serves as the winery and guest lodging. The vineyards are in some of the most coveted areas of Alsace that includes vineyards designated as “premier cru”.Our long time clients know the name “Nicolas Laugner”. Nico, as he is better known, came to work an internship with us at Anne’s in 2011 and became one of our most beloved team members. He came to the US to learn about the American palate so that his family’s wines could be produced to not only appeal to French palates but America’s too. Nicolas is the 11th generation of the family to be at the helm of the winery. Allimant-Laugner is truly a family winery and has been ever since its inception. The entire family works in the winery, whether working in the vineyards or in the day to day administrative tasks, everyone pitches in. A few years ago, Nico took the reins at the winery from his father and is focusing on not only producing high quality wines for local consumption but also for our enjoyment here in the US. The wines have hit great notes not only with our clientele here in the US but also has garnished great acclaimed with the critics and magazines (Wall Street Journal, People magazine, Robert Parker, Wine Enthusiast, etc.). Nico has began to expand production of wine with grapes that have been largely ignored in the mainstream wine scene, and this brings us to the wine featured in our wine club this month, Sylvaner. Sylvaner or Silvaner is a variety of white wine grape grown primarily in Alsace and Germany, where its official name is GrünerSilvaner. It is a white grape that is gaining momentum (once again) - we think it will be a great Summer wine! This sylvaner comes from vineyards that are 40 years old, planted on granite soil. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and allowed to rest with the lees to enhance the fruit notes and silky texture of this wine. Chill to 42F, and enjoy the delightful floral aromas in this wine, which are also found in the palate. Honeysuckle, jasmine, honey, ripe peaches, nectarines and even hits of unripen pineapple. A refreshing and delightful wine. This wine can be consumed as an aperitif, or as the lovely people of Allimant-Laugner do, enjoy it with seafood, cold soups, salads or by itself on a warm summer afternoon! $17.99

2015 PIAZZANO – CHIANTI

CHIANTI DOCG (TUSCANY), ITALY - NO OAK

The Bettarini family makes a wonderful line of Tuscan wines, olive oil, and honey at their farm located outside the village of Empoli, about 9 miles west of Florence. Orlando and his sister Ilaria now operate the estate that was started by their great uncle Othello in the late 1940s. Located in a valley formed by the Camerata River the estate sits on a beautiful landscape that has classic Tuscan vistas. The wines are very well made with clean and pure flavors. The reds are crafted exclusively to be like the classic wines from Chianti that were made (prior to 2010) from old vine Sangiovese, Cannaiolo, Colorino and other traditional Tuscan varieties. This wine is made with 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cannaiolo, and 10% Colorino, fermented and aged in cement vats, bottled unfiltered and unfined. This is a high quality wine with enticing raspberry, vanilla, plum, cherry, cedar, and spice aromas. On the palate you will experience dusty tannins and flavors that match the aromas and a long earthy finish. This is the ideal wine for meatballs and spaghetti, your favorite meat pizza, or even a hearty Italian vegetarian dish, seasoned with bold, herbal flavors. $16.00

2013 BODEGAS MENADE – “CRETA” VERDEJO – ORGANIC FARMING

RUEDA, SPAIN - NO OAK

Rueda has been producing white wines for a very long time, and they have became famous for it. But that fame has come with a price, some producers with high demand, have opted for frightfully high yields and the removal of old vine Verdejo in favor of Sauvignon Blanc. This has cost the region some of its reputation for great wine whites, which is why we love producers like Bodegas Menade, who is run by the Sanz siblings: Marco, the viticulturalist, Richard, the winemaker and Alejandra, who manages sales and communications. If the Sanz name sounds familiar it is because one cannot throw a bunch of grapes in Rueda without hitting a winemaker named, or related to this large, extended family. Marco, Richard, and Alejandra are not content to rest on anyone’s laurels however, nor are they interested in what Rueda has become, rather they are driven by what it is capable of becoming while respecting what the region is best at producing. To this end, Marco has converted the property to organic farming, and Richard has traveled all around the world learning his trade – an experience which has taught him that the future of Rueda lies in championing the indigenous Verdejo grape, the necessity of old vines and the importance of natural yeast fermentations to create complex and satisfying wines. This delicious summer wine is produced with 100% Verdejo grapes from 60 year old vines. The grapes are harvested at night to preserve freshness and produce a vibrant wine. The nose is inviting with notes of nectarines, pears, and ripe pineapple. The tropical flavors carry on to the palate accompanied by crisp acidity and delicious structure. The finish is floral, light and fresh, and lengthy. This wine would make a great companion to fish tacos, salads topped with fresh stone fruits, pork loin, tofu dishes, or if cheese is what you want, they try it with Manchego or Feta. This is a delicious and refreshing wine …perfect for summer drinking. $18.50
