2013 HERON – PINOT NOIR - MONTERREY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Two of this month’s wines are from the same winemaker, Ms. Laely Heron, the owner and winemaker of Heron Wines. Besides being a “cult” winemaker, Laely also shares her talents as wine judge at the Los Angeles International Wine competition, which is where we learned about her wines. An unconventional childhood – living in mining towns on four continents – fostered Laely’s love of travel, adventure and a desire to explore and to experience the cultures, foods and wines of the world. Wanderlust and curiosity have led her on many paths including studying winemaking in Bordeaux, opening a restaurant and importing wine in Denmark, and pursuing Master of Wine studies. With this love of wine and an entrepreneurial spirit, she started Heron Wines in 1994 with little more than a credit card, a "business plan" sketched out on a napkin, and an idea to make great and affordable wine Heron has become a “cult wine” among master sommeliers and chefs, a favorite “by the glass” pour in the nation’s top restaurants, and a consistent “Best Buy” in the wine press. As a matter of fact, when Heron wines came to our attention, they came highly recommended by and fellow wine judges who have been followers and fans of Ms. Heron’s wines for years, and rightly so. Upon tasting these wines and talking to Laely herself, we knew we had to introduce you to these wine gems! So let’s talk about the first wine: This delicious wine is 100% from Monterrey County, with fruit coming from the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands. This region boasts maritime influences, driving winds, and saturated fog from the deep hyper-cold waters off Monterey Bay. Just perfect for Pinot Noir! The berries are destemmed and then the wine is fermented to dry in stainless steel tanks and transferred to French oak barrels to age in two and three-year-old French oak barrels for about ten months. This delicious wine is ready to go right away. It invites you to drink it with ripe inviting aromas of black cherry, plum, and violets, accented by gentle sweet oak. Surprisingly forward on the palate, the wine’s plush tannins frame flavors of baked cherry, strawberry, and spice cake, with a touch of anise. This wine makes a great pairing to Duck comfit, roasted pork or even grilled Portobello mushroom. $20.00

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE 1 RED WINE & 1 WHITE WINE WILL RECEIVE THE ABOVE WINE &:

2015 QUINTA DE LINHARES – VINHO VERDE “AVESSO” - VINHO VERDE, PORTUGAL

Last year, our buyer had the opportunity to travel to Vinho Verde (pronounced veeng-yo vaird). It is situated on the coast in the north of Portugal. Vinho Verde means young wines; the wines are released 3-6 months after harvest. The wines of Vinho Verde have long been known for their vibrant fruit, low alcohol and refreshing qualities - a combination that makes them one of the most versatile partners with food. Although the Vinho Verde region has been producing wine since Roman times, this region is relatively still unknown here in the US. Most of the wines brought to the US under the Vinho Verde appellation are usually a blend of many grapes, mostly Alvarinho (Albarino) with other white varietals from the region. Rarely do we see a single varietal Vinho Verde in the US, which is why when we tasted this wine made with 100% Avesso, we had to taste it and share it with out club members. Avesso is a native grape varietal to the region and has aromas and flavors that are similar to Spanish Albariño. This wine is produced by Quinta de Linhares, located in Penafiel and was one of the wineries visited by our buyer, Spreti. We are so delighted that the wines made it to the US. Chill this wine to about 42F, then open it and note the aromas of pears, peaches, and green apples. This is a medium to full body wine with excellent depth and lively acidity. The finish is refreshing and leaves notes that make the mouth water. The region where this wine is produced is very similar in climate to Southern California and the locals pair this with fresh seafood, ceviches, and grilled fish, so do as they do! Serve it this 4th of July with ceviche! $19.99

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO RED WINES RECEIVE THE HERON PINOT NOIR &:

2015 MAYRO – “FOSSO CORNO” MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO DOC - MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO, ITALY

The Biscardo family owed Fosso Corno is located in Abruzzo, and has been producing wine since 1897. Originally the family produced wine in the Veneto. Great-grandfather, Terenzio Biscardo, was the first to cellar and bottle wine and grandfather Pompilio Biscardo was the first to begin exports to Germany and Belgium. In 2001 Augusto, with son Marco and daughter Sabrina, bought the estate in Abruzzo and began renovating the vineyard in 2002. Abruzzo is largely made up of Co-ops and commercial wineries, but the Biscardo family has remained a small producer focusing on quality rather than quantity. The grape varietal used in this wine is Montepulciano. This grape variety dates back 1,200 years to this area and has adapted to the Mediterranean climate. They produce dark and robust Montepulciano wines with moderate acidity. The secondary wine for this month’s offering is produced from estate fruit, 100% Montepulciano, made from a selection of fruit from the highest vineyard site facing full southeast towards the Adriatic Sea. The grapes were hand-harvested then fermented in stainless steel tanks with daily pumpovers and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This delicious wine is ripe with black plum, blackberry, anis, clove, and tobacco notes. The acidity is brisk and refreshing enhancing the fruit notes with very silky tannins that linger for quite a while and finish with just a hint of black pepper. This is a great red to try for Syrah lovers! This will pair nicely with Santa Maria Tri Tip, grilled pork ribs, or even pulled pork. If you are thinking casual dining, a sausage pizza will be a great pairing. $17.50

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE QUINTA DE LINHARES AVESSO &:

2016 HERON - CHARDONNAY - MENDOCINO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

If you read the first page of this month’s wine club offering, then you have already read about Laely Heron, the one-woman show winery that has become a cult-favorite. She has been producing wines for over 20 years and has a total production of 7 thousand cases between all the wines she produces; Cabernet Sauvignon, two different Pinot Noirs, Merlot and now this lovely Chardonnay which you will be receiving as your secondary white wine. The fruit comes from Mendocino County and that’s where the interesting thing with this wine begins to happen. Laely trained in Bordeaux and feels that the natural acidity of the wine would be hindered by too much use of oak, so she skips it all together on this wine. She also foregoes malolactic fermentation, thus no toast and butter will be detectable here. Laely wants her wines to focus on the quality of the fruit to be enhanced by the crisp natural acidity. When you pour the first glass you will notice the aromas of yellow apples, meyer lemons, peaches, and perhaps even toasted almonds. The wine is clean and refreshing on the palate, with citrus notes of lemon, orange, and peach and a long lingering tangy finish. This wine is your summer Chardonnay for pairing with fish, poultry grilled with light marinades (lemon, garlic and butter). Wanna invite your friends for the 4th of July and sip it by the pool? Serve it with a lovely Tripple crème cheese! $15.50
