2012 MCEVOY RANCH – RED PIANO - MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – CERTIFIED ORGANIC

Proprietors Nan Tucker &Nion McEvoy planted grapevines in 2006 to produce wines that would complement their world-class extra virgin olive oil. They knew their very special parcel of land could produce something extraordinary if they were patient and deliberate in their plantings. It paid off; they now have five separate certified organic vineyards on 28 acres of land that are diligently cared for and grown with Organic farming methods. They work hard to bring out the best in each harvest. Their mission is to maintain the deep connection between being a custodian of the land and crafting delicious artisanal wines. The vineyards are located in a unique location in west Marin County’s Petaluma Gap, which offers a distinct climate and varied soil types that are conducive to cultivating their estate organic plantings. The region’s microclimate guarantees that the vineyards are often shrouded in fog during the early morning hours and evenings, helping ensure steady, gradual fruit maturation, resulting in grapes with great levels of sugar and acidity for tasty wines. This wine is a delicious example of their work, Red Piano blend, named so because like music to your ears, this wine is a delicious symphony in your mouth consisting of Syrah 60%, Montepulciano 10%, Grenache 10%, Alicante 10%,with the remaining 10% Refosco and Viognier. All these grapes were fermented in stainless steel then aged in large French oak barrels for 20 months. The flavors are typical of a cool-climate Syrah, with ripe fig, Santa Rosa plums, blackberry, anise, and a bit of fresh rosemary. This wine has delicious elements of minerality, and fresh acidity and a finish that is quite powerful and complex. Medium body with lots of structure! Enjoy this by itself or with food but since we are still in the heat of summer, be sure to bring it to cellar temperature (60-65F) before consuming. Then pair it with you favorite grilled meat, be it a filet mignon or grilled pork chops. If you want to have it with Cheese, try it with Trader Joe’s Creamy Toscano Cheese soaked in Syrah.

2016 J. MOURAT – O.V.N.I. (OBJET VINICOLE NON IDENTIFIE) WHITE BLEND - VAL DE LOIRE, FRANCE – ORGANIC

O.V.N.I, (object vinicole non identifie) Viticultural Object Not Identifed…a playful take on words from a winery that helped create a rarely heard of, even in France, appellation “Fiefs Vendeens”. The Fiefs Vendéens wine appellation lies at the extremities of France's Loire Valley below where the Loire spills into the Atlantic Ocean in the area known as the Vendée. Since the region went unnamed until 1984, JMourat decided to call the wines produced from this region “Ovni”. But that’s where the lightheartedness ends, as the winery and region produces stunning wines made by the region’s well-versed winemakers. In addition, the family estate, Chateau Marie de Fou, which has witnessed the volatile events throughout French history, from the 100 Year War to the French Revolution, now sits peacefully on its 96 hectares of precious vineyards. And these vineyards are different from what we may see in other appellations throughout France. The vines are very short…deliberately stunted. They crouch low to the ground so the local strong winds cannot wreak havoc. Soils range from sodden clay to beautiful, striated ancient schist that imparts an incredible mineral flavor to the grapes that thrive in these difficult soils. This wine is a delicious example of what this region can produce. An organic blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Chardonnay from 15 year old vines, hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Then the wine is aged three months in stainless tanks on its lees before it is bottled. So what do we get? We taste a refreshing wine, perfect for lighter foods, as in the region. This wine is consumed with the local seafood…think shrimp, lightly seasoned grilled fish, even ceviches. This wine is quite aromatic too, as you pour yourself a glass, you’ll notice the notes of mangos, apricots, and even ripe peaches. The texture is silky with notes of tropical fruit and delicious minerality and a hint of pepper in the crisp finish. Quite the summer sipper!!! $

2015 ESPELT – OLD VINE GARNACHA - EMPRODA DO (CATALAN), SPAIN – CERTIFIED ORGANIC (ECOCERT)

The Espelt family have for centuries grown grapes in Empordà, Spain. Empordais located in the northeastern corner of Catalonia, Spain in the province of Girona. Until 2006, it was initially known as DO Empordà-Costa Brava to associate the large tourist beach area with the region. In the early 2000s they built a cellar and began bottling wines under their name. Headed by viticulturalist Lluis Espelt and his two children Anna (winemaker) and Damià, the farming is certified organic by ECOCERT not only because it makes better wines but because the vineyards are located on a mix of sandy granite, limestone and slate in and around several nature preserves in the area. Espelt produces wines from indigenous varieties and styles of wines. Our choice for secondary red this month is their old vine Garnacha. Produced from 95 year old vines; the grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and carefully crushed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks followed by 3 month aging in new French oak. This wine is delightful!!! We loved the bursting notes of fresh raspberries, earth and vanilla that jump right out of the glass, both to the nose and onto the palate. Medium bodied, lighter than a Merlot but much more berry notes than a Pinot Noir. No need to decant this wine, this wine is ready to go when you open it, but do serve it at cellar temperature 60F-65F. Fresh and easy drinking that will be at home with Pizza, pasta, paella or even just as a sipping red while you watch your favorite TV show!

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE J MOURAT O.V.N.I &:

2016 DELAS – “LES LAUNES” CROZES-HERMITAGE BLANC - CROZES-HERMITAGE (RHONE), FRANCE

Old World wine lovers check this out… white Crozes-Hermitage!! While Delas is not a tiny producer by any means, we chose this wine because it is rare to see a Crozes-Hermitage Blanc of this quality at this affordable price. We had to have you try it and enjoy it. The celebrated Delas Frères wine company was founded back in 1835. Since 1996, the spirit and soul that contributed to its reputation for high quality wines have been restored, and to prove it, they have wines like this. Delas adheres to a single-vineyard approach working with their 70 acres of vines and also working with like-minded owner-wine growers to ensure that the company is able to source grapes grown on individual parcels, which reflect their own unique terroir and philosophy. This wine exemplifies this approach. The grapes 80% Marsanne, and 20% Roussanne (both native to the Rhone) and come from the “Les Launes” vineyards, which are located in the northern portion of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The grapes are hand-harvested and transported to the winery in small boxes. They are then gently pressed and fermented at a low temperature of 61-64°F in closed tanks in order to enhance the aromatic complexity of the Marsanne and Roussanne. After fermentation, the wine sits on its lees (the sediment of wine in the barrel) to help develop richness and structure, while preserving its exceptional varietal characteristics. Bottling takes place around mid-April, making this vintage almost brand spanking new to the US. So what is this wine like? The wine has a golden hue. The nose is expressive, with aromas of lemon verbena, citrus skin, with hints of exotic fruits, such as lychees and mangoes. The palate is fresh and fruity, yet dry, one might even say a hint rustic! This is a food wine; try this wine with country cooking, steamed fish or fish in sauce, chicken with fruit salsas (apricot, peach, or mango) and any type of rinded cheese like Camembert. A votre santé!
