OCTOBER 2017 WINE CLUB NOTES & NEWS

Happy Fall everyone!!!   Not only the weather is changing...lots of things are changing at Anne's..but for the better.  

If you have not noticed a charge to your card it is because we have switched to a safer and more efficient Point of Sales system at Anne's.  The changes will lead to you having more control and access to wine club member only features that we are planning for the future.  What does that mean for now?  It means that when you come in to pick up your wines at Anne's, you will receive a new sign up for to fill out to fulfill requirements from our new system.  Please be aware that the normal discounts to wine club members will be on hold until the system has received your credit card number.  We appreciate your patience during the changes.

On another note, our fearless somm Spreti, will be not be here during the wine club Saturday but we have Michael Frank, distributor and awesome wine professional who will be taking over for Spreti during her short absence (Traning trip).  Join us for the wine club members wine tasting this coming Saturday (October 7th) from 2 to 5pm.  

Don't forget "Foodie Saturday" will be Saturday, October 21st and the theme is "Anything goes Potluck"

CLIENTES WHO RECEIVE A RED AND A WHITE WILL GET: 

2012 BODEGAS ESTAMPA – “ASSEMBLAGE” RESERVE RED BLEND - COLCHAGUA VALLEY D.O., CHILE 

Get ready for a delicious, bold, red blend from Chile. Bodegas Estampais located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley in Chile. A fertile yet seismically active area bordered with the Pacific Ocean on the west and on the east by the Andes Mountains. Colchagua means “valley of small lakes” as the land has a river that goes from east to west and irrigates the valley and fills the small lakes found throughout. The region is known for its beautiful vineyard-covered hills, hundred-year-old vines, enchanting colonial estate houses, and modern high tech wineries. Bodegas Estampa the only winery in Chile that specializes in the production of blends, and the name? Well they got it from a local story of a traveling salesman who was selling in the local square offering religious “estampas”, pocket-sized prayer cards, to passersby. Suddenly he noticed that the picture of Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) was miraculously circling over his head. After flying before an amazed and growing crowd for 15 minutes, it flew across the plaza, crossed the Mapocho River, continued its flight, and landed far from its origin at the feet of a mother who was teaching catechism to her children. To celebrate this extraordinary event, a Catholic grotto was erected on the site where the card had landed in 1794, followed by a chapel built at a later date. The winery is located in this town and this is where we find the vineyards for this bold blend. It is made with 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, and 9% Syrah, fermented in stainless steel, and aged in French oak for only 8 months. This wine is a dark crimson red with hints of purple. Aromas of blackberries, plums, vanilla, and even hints of pepper will jump out of your glass….but be sure to decant. This wine needs a bit of time to get the aromas and flavors rolling. And those yummy flavors of baked plums, blackberries, clove, with a hint of spiciness on the finish. The acidity of this wine brings all the right components together and makes it an ideal wine for fatty cuts of meat, or your favorite sausage pizza. This wine was tasted with Chile Rellenos and it was a delicious pairing. Cheese is your game? Try it with English Cheddar with caramelized onions. $18.99

2014 DOMAINE DE RIEUX – COTES DE GASCONE IGP - COTES DE GASCONE IGP, FRANCE – ORGANIC 

The winery and vineyards are located in the eastern corner of Bas-Armagnac near the town of Eauze, (near Toulouse). The vineyards of Domaine de Rieux lie in several parcels surrounding the family home. The Domaine de Rieux vineyards were purchased in 1963 by the Armagnac producing Châteaude Tariquet. This famous property had belonged to the Grassa family since 1912, and a new generation, Yves and Maïté, had just taken over the year before. Seeing the bulk market for surplus production of Armagnac base wine drying up, they decided to diversify into a lighter style of winemaking. Yves Grassa pioneered the conversion of these inexpensive white wines from Armagnac into a clean, fresh, intense, fruity style of tremendous appeal; even to the consumers of the world's finest wines. In the early 1980's, he employed the now-famous Denis Dubourdieu as a consultant. Together they developed the novel winemaking technique called “cold maceration”, which is cold soaking the grapes before fermentation begins which produces tastier wines. Thanks to this innovative approach and an obsessive attention to detail, the venture became a commercial success story. And tasty wines they do produce. This wine is made with 100% Sauvignon Blanc, hand-picked, destemmed and given 5-6 hours of cold maceration for extra complexity before a gentle pressing. The must is then left to settle for a couple of days, before a slow, controlled cool fermentation that can last a month. This is the key to the freshness, purity and aromatic intensity of this wine, and the careful handing goes all to the way to bottling. Chill this wine to about 42F and pour yourself a refreshing glass You’ll notice right out of the gate, notes of lemon, sage, limes, and even nectarines. The palate is full of fresh lemon and lime acidity, clean yet silky texture, with lingering citrus notes that carry on for a while. This wine is a perfect pairing for acidic foods like salads topped with vinaigrettes, salty foods, or cream sauces. $16.99

2013 LUPE-CHOLET – COTEAUX BOURGUIGNONS - COTEAUX BOURGUIGNONS (BURGUNDY), FRANCE 

In 2011, Burgundy launched “Coteaux Bourguignons” a new appellation designation (101st appellation in Burgundy) to cover wines that came from different regions within Burgundy or blends that were previously labeled only as regional wines. This allows wines with either with a single varietal or blends that come from locations that would not otherwise fit into other well regarded designations but came from good producers to be showcased with a better name. This wine is a great example of that. Lupe-Cholet is a wine grower and producer that has been around since 1903 and exports to over 70 countries around the world. They are located in Nuit Saint Georges, with two partners, Alexandre de Mayol de Lupé and Félix de Cholet who decided to join forces to create the house which still bears their name, Lupé Cholet. They produce world class Burgundy from their 61 acres of vineyards in Chablis and the Côte d’Or, and sometimes purchase grapes from selected high-quality producers from other regions. While they have been producing single varietal Burgundies, they also produce blends like this one that now can carry an appellation designation and for lack of a better term, can be taken more seriously by the well versed wine consumer. This delicious wine is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, from Cotes de Beaune and Beaujolais. It is vinified and aged in such a way as to showcase Burgundy’s grape varieties as well as the diversity of the soils that make up the different terroirs. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with maturation on the lees in French oak (6 to 8 months), this preserves the wine’s fruit while lending aromatic complexity and oaked notes. This wine is ready to drink now! Open and decant for about ½ hour to allow the aromas of red cherries, baking spice, currant, and licorice stick with hints of rose petals pull you in. The palate also showcases zippy acidity to make the mouth water yet carry all those ripe red fruit notes all the way through to the finish. Silky and smooth tannins that makes this wine a great red to transition to fall’s heavier reds. Serve this wine at about 57°F. This Coteaux Bourguignon will bring you an accessible and immediate pleasure for any occasions: hors d’œuvres, summer picnics, grilled or barbecued meats as well as with poultry and moderately ripe cheeses. We love this wine with Duck confit! Drink within the next 2 years! $20.00

2015 FATTORIA ZERBINA – BIANCO DE CEPARANO - ROMAGNA DOCG, ITALY 

Fattoria Zerbina, named after a local warm southerly wind, is located at Marzeno in Romagna where the land begins to rise towards the mountains that divide Romagna from Tuscany. Run by “one of the most talented women in Italian wine” as per the Wine Advocate magazine, Cristina Geminiani, who trained in Bordeaux and Milan and has received numerous awards in the Tre Bicchieri Italian wine awards and has been listed among “The Stars” of the famed Gambero Rosso Wine Guide. With these kind of stats, we’ll try anything she produces, and we glad we did. The secondary white for this month’s offerings is her Bianco di Ceparano, which is a remarkably delicious white wine made from 100% Albana, a local grape found mainly in Emilia-Romagna. Its origin seems to date back to Roman times, from the Colli Albani area. The berry is white, medium and spheroid with yellow-green or golden skin, waxy. The wine obtained from the Albana grape produces wines with intense aromas and good balance between freshness and softness. This wine is a fantastic example of what a delicious wine it can produce. This wine with its brilliant gold color and aromas of lemons, peaches, and tangerine will pull you in. The flavors are minerally, fresh, and are surrounded by bright acidity providing perfect balance to the fruit. The finish is so delicious and satisfying that you want to go back for more. An overall beautiful wine! Chill this wine to about 45F and pair it with mortadella (a cold cut studded with pistachio slivers and eaten either in slices or chunks) or if you’re in the mood for fall cooking? Try it with squash soup, roasted pumpkin chucks (olive oil, salt, pepper, and a touch of cinnamon – bake for 45ms at 375f). Welcome fall!! $21.99
