2016 DOMAINE DE LA CHARMOISE – “HENRY MARIONNET” GAMAY - LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE – ORGANICALLY GROWN GRAPES
It’s time to think about wines that will pair with traditional Thanksgiving foods, whether you are preparing Turkey or choosing other meat, and in some cases vegetarian; the wines chosen for this month were chosen to enhance your gatherings. The primary red wine that was chosen for November comes to us from the Loire Valley. The Marionnet family has owned the Domaine de la Charmoise since 1850. The winery is nestled in the small village of Soings, between the Loire and Cher rivers. This ensures excellent maturity of the grapes and provides shelter against spring frosts, which many vineyards in France have been victim to in the last couple of years. These vineyards are, for lack of a better word, fortunate due to their location. Henry Marionnet and his son, Jean Sebastien, are responsible for the well over 150 acres of Gamay grapes that they have grown since the 1960s. They are one of the first producers to make truly honest Gamay here in the Loire Valley. Henry has a very clear vision and style that Jean-Sebastien nurtures and carries through to this day. What is exceptional, besides the fact that they grow Gamay in the Loire, is that many of these vines own-rooted, having been grafted from pre-phylloxera cuttings, making them quite rare. The wines here are produced using neither chemicals, nor oak, and produce wines that are tasty and of great quality. This wine is going to be a great wine for the turkey. Made with 100% organically grown Gamay grapes, harvested entirely by hand and undergoes a second sorting at the winery to ensure only the best quality grapes are in your bottle. The grapes go though carbonic maceration in stainless steel tanks for approximately 5 days (this gives it that extra punch of fruity quality), without addition of yeasts or sulfur. The wine rested in stainless steel tank until bottling in the spring of 2017. This wine is a delicious light-bodied symphony of floral, fruity, and vegetal scents. Violets, blackberries, and jammy cherries. This wine has a light texture, smooth tannins with fresh acidity and a lovely finish. This wine is a great pairing to the traditional roasted turkey topped off with cranberry sauce and all the trimmings. Drink now or keep up to 5 years $19.99

2016 TRUJILLO WINES – “MADELYNNE” WHITE CUVEE - CALIFORNIA
Michael Trujillo has been making wine in Napa Valley for over 30 years for some of the best known wineries in Napa. Michael discovered his passion for winemaking in the early 1980s during a spring break from his college studies as an engineer. On a road trip to California, he stayed with a family friend who had a small winery in Napa Valley. It was a life- changing visit, as Michael began to work alongside Jim Allen and his brother Steve in the planting of Sequoia Grove’s vineyard on the Rutherford Bench. For his namesake wine, Michael blends grapes from several of the best vineyards in Napa Valley and works closely with the growers in developing cultivation practices that yield notable fruit year after year. We met Michael this last summer while working on a large wine tasting in Downtown Los Angeles (LA LIVE) featuring wineries of Latino heritage, and upon tasting his wines we knew we had to have his wines at Anne’s. After speaking with him for a while we could see (and taste) how Michael’s history, knowledge, and more than 34 years of winemaking experience led to the delicious wines he was sharing with us. Michael’s table was packed with clients asking for more wine! So we are honored and delighted to bring a wine to you that we tasted and are the only Southern California retailer to carry his line of “Madelynne” wines. Madelynne is Michael’s daughter and the wines were named for her. This wine is a perfect white for your Thanksgiving table, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer, fermented dry and in stainless steel…no oak at all and it’s a delicious blend. The blending of these two particular white varietals brings forth exhilarating aroma combinations of citrus and tropical fruits, along with hints of orange blossom, honey, and a tiny hint of sweet pecan brittle. The flavors are as expressive of the aromas: crisp, sweet pink grapefruit, star fruit and a touch of lemon grass and white floral notes. Nice, firm, well integrated acidity holds this wine together perfectly as it rolls out to a lingering, delightful and satisfying finish. This wine should be served chilled at bout 43F, then served as an aperitif or to be your white for Thanksgiving dinner. This wine is extremely limited and due to the fires in Napa this year, there may not be a next vintage available. This vintage had only 153 cases produced and at the time of this writing the tasting room in Napa only had about 40 cases left. So if you love this wine like we did, get more now and serve a wine that had a wine tasting for over 2K people in Los Angeles, lining up to taste. This wine retails for $24.00.

2015 GIACOMO GRIBALDI – DOLCETTO D’ALBA - DOLCETTO D’ALBA DOC (PIEDMONT), ITALY
Giacomo Grimaldi winery was founded in 1930 by Ernesto Grimaldi. In 1983 the winery was inherited by Giacomo, who sold the greatest part of his grapes in bulk, while keeping only a small part to be bottled for sale to a mostly local clientele. In 1996 Ferruccio Grimaldi, Giacomo's son, decided to continue the family wine business. Animated by a great passion, Ferruccio started to produce wines exclusively from the family's vineyards. He began acquiring vineyards of Nebbiolo in the most prestigious Barolo zones, firmly convinced of the great potential of Barolo wine. The family's vines grew from 1.5 hectares to 10 hectares. The current vineyards are situated in the communes of Barolo, Novello and Monforte and planted with Nebbiolo for Barolo, Barbera d'Alba, and Dolcetto d’Alba. In the vineyard there is significant attention and a deep devotion to the care of the vines. Ferruccio is renowned amongst other wine makers for his 'perfectionism' in caring for the plants. Green harvest is vital to Ferruccio, to reduce the quantity of the yield for a better quality. Our secondary selection of red for this month is their Dolcetto d’Alba, which is vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged for a further 9 months in stainless before the bottling. We love Dolcetto for Thanksgiving for a couple of reasons, one if you want a heartier red with the holiday meal, this wine will serve that purpose. It has tannins and acid to enhance food without becoming the only thing you taste during your meal. And two, this is a great fall wine that will go from the Thanksgiving meal (turkey or red meats) to a Tuesday night sausage pizza….it is a perfect food wine that doesn’t require much decanting and will please many palates, from beginner to experienced. 2016 SERPENS WINES – DRY TOKAJ - TOKAJ, HUNGARY
Since last year, we had a love affair with dry Tokaj here at Anne’s. And many of you appreciated the one we introduced you to early in 2016. The sad part of working with small production wines is that when a great wine like that shows up and it is discovered, it sells out fast and sometimes we can’t get more. So we spent the last year looking for another amazing dry Tokaj…and we found it with Serpens Winery. Vintner Sándor Zsurki’s family has been in the wine business for three generations. Their oldest vineyards date back over 80 years. In fact, some of their plots were previously owned by members of the Austro-Hungarian royal family-most notably by Princess Stéphanie of Belgium. She was famous for the bird of paradise she kept as a pet and this is the very same bird motif represented on the label. Founded in 2015, Serpens Wines was named after the river Bodrog’s winding path along Tokaj’s foothills, home to the Zsurki family’s vineyards. This delicious Dry Tokaj is made from grapes harvested from two vineyards, planted with 50-year old Harslevelu vines, owned and managed by Serpens. This wine is a triple blend of Furmint (65%), Harslevelu (25%) and Yellow Muscat (10%). All hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks to allow the fruit notes of nectarine, white peache, and very ripe Meyer lemons to come through enhanced by the zippy acidity that will make your mouth water. This wine is a classic aperitif wine as it will make your guests mouth water and get them ready for your culinary treats. This delicious wine retails for $15.00
