Happy New Year Wine Club members!!  here are your wines for the month of January!!

2016 JUDITH BECK – BECK INK - BURGELAND, AUSTRIA – BIODYNAMIC FARMING 

The Judith Beck estate is based in the Burgenland, Austria. Within the village of Gols, this is one of Austria's warmest wine growing areas, the first to harvest, and the production center of its finest full bodied, dry red wines. Judith’s parents, Matthias and Christine Beck, founded the family estate in 1976. Judith Beck made her first vintage in 2001 and in 2004 she assumed full control of the winery. Managing the family winery comes naturally to Judith who has an innate “sixth-sense” feel for the regional varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent. The Becks built an impressive, new production and aging cellar in 2005. It allows Judith to manipulate her wines as little as possible in the vinification process. Judith and her father, Matthias, have practiced sustainable viticulture from the outset, and converted to bio-dynamic practice with the 2007 vintage. She uses only native yeasts in the fermentation process…all natural. The wine for this month is a juicy blend of 80% Zweigelt and 20% St. Laurent. She chooses the most forward and expressive batches from the Zweigelt and St. Laurent harvest for the INK. Beck picks all of the fruit by hand and sorts the grapes in the vineyard and at the winery before de-stemming. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, triggered only by the grapes’ native yeasts, in stainless steel tanks. The young wine is then moved into neutral acacia wood casks for two months where the wine completes its malolactic fermentation. It is then transferred to neutral casks for 8-10 months of aging. The 2 varieties are assembled and bottled in September before the next harvest. The wine has a deep purple color, with notes of violets, blackberries, fresh blueberries, and a light hint of vanilla. The first sip is full of flavors of the same fruits, with refreshing acid, mineral notes, and well balanced structure with smooth medium tannins. This wine is great by itself, but a good food marriage would be spicy tuna rolls (yes sushi!), grilled tuna steaks, Pad Thai, or even duck confit!

2016 TONS DE DUOROM – WHITE WINE - DOURO DOC, PORTUGAL 

The name Duorum, which is Latin for “from two,” captures the spirit of this famed Portuguese winery, which was founded in 2007 by João Portugal Ramos and José Soares Franco, two of Portugal’s most renowned oenologists. Ramos, widely considered the "King of the Alentejo," began his career as a groundbreaking wine consultant in the 1980s, and today runs successful projects in the Alentejo, Vinho Verde, Beiras, and Douro regions. Franco, on the other hand, spent 27 years as wine director for one of Portugal's most renowned wines: the Douro's Barca Velha. Longtime friends and admirers of each other’s work, they sought to pool their combined 60 years of winemaking experience and create a wine together. Today, Duorum is widely recognized as a gold standard for Portuguese wines. This delicious wine caught our attention as a perfect winter white wine. Tons de Duorom, which translates to mean "tones" of Duorum, is inspired by the bright colors that result from the reflection of the sun on the Duoro River, which creates different tones in the vineyards. Made with a blend of 30% Viosinho, 25% Rabigato, 20% Verdelho, 20% Arinto, and 5% Moscatel grapes. All fermented without oak, the wine has a sunny lemon yellow color and an intense aroma dominated by tropical and citrus fruits. Additionally, the wine finishes with long lasting flavors of flowers, crystallized fruits, such as ginger and lemons, and strident minerality. This wine will make a delicious accompaniment to ceviche, shellfish, cioppino, and grilled poultry.

2013 VIÑA HERMINIA – CRIANZA RIOJA, SPAIN 

Located in the Rioja Baja, at the southeastern end of the Rioja, Viña Herminia is run and owned by Emilio Lustau. The winery produces a full range of Rioja wines all from the unmistakable warmer climate of the region, which produces rich, generous, fruity wines of enormous appeal. Respected Australian winemaker David Morrison is behind these delicious wines, and his influence on quality is immediately evident. The second red wine in our January wine club selections is a bold red made with 85% Tempranillo, and 15% Garnacha. Grapes grown during a year that provided abundant rains and cold weather made this vintage atypical compared to previous years. Work on the land with a selective grape picking had a significant impact on the harvest, optimizing the quality of the grapes, only the best made it into this bottle. This wine shows a garnet colour, with cherry tones. Complex, elegant and well-structured in the nose, with vanilla and nutty aromas and notes of red fruit. Well balanced, elegant on the palate, with a long and gentle finish. This wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of both French and American Oak. This wine is a delicious pairing to red meats, game, or semi-hard cheeses (Iberico or Manchego). A charcouterie plate with Graber olives and cheeses with a bottle of this by the fire is a perfect way to spend an evening. This wine can be aged another 4-5 years! $
