2016 ROCK WALL WINES – “ROMANCER” HERINGER VINEYARD RED BLEND - CLARKSBURG, CALIFORNIA

February is the month of love…and we LOVE this wine!! Once again the team of Kent and Shauna Rosemblum (formerly Rosemblum Cellars) bring us another delicious wine. You may remember we introduced you to the awesome winemaking at Rock Wall Wines of Kent Rosenblum (King of Zin – Rosemblum Cellars) and his very talented winemaker daughter Shauna Rosemblum. Kent, after a very successful tenure with Rosenblum Cellars, winning many awards and many wine competitions as well, sold the winery and with his daughter they started Rock Wall Wines. The winery was founded 2008 and set up in a converted hangar at the old Alameda Naval Air Station, which overlooks the gorgeous San Francisco skyline. Drawing upon Kent’s experience and long relationships with some of the finest vineyards in Northern and Central California, they set out to make excellent wines from many well known grapes and other not so common grapes in the bay area, and are doing it well! This month we are introducing you to their wine for February, and it’s an EXCLUSIVE wine. When we tasted this wine, they informed us that the wine was only available to their wine club members but because of our friendship, they would allow us a shipment for our wine club members as well. This wine will be NOT be available anywhere else! So if you love it, like we do, be sure to take home a few bottles, because there is only a small amount to go around. This delicious wine is a blend of 34% Malbec, 33% Mourvèdre, and 33% Petit Verdot. The blend was created by layering wines, with Malbec the bottom of each bin, Mourvédre into the middle of each bin and Petit Verdot on top. This is a unique wine because Malbec and Petit Verdot would be a proper Bordeaux blend, but then they “fun it up” a bit with some Mourvédre, which is a Rhône varietal. The result is as serious as a Bordeaux blend, but with candied floral nuances that help flesh out the mouthfeel and create layers that one would not expect to find in a Bordeaux blend. This wine is brimming with ripe strawberry, eucalyptus, graham cracker, fresh dried black tobacco, plum, cocoa puffs, lavender, and a fragrant jasmine finish. This wine will make a great Valentine wine! Grill a filet mignon and have a chocolate lava cake for dessert with this wine. $30.00

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE 1 RED WINE & 1 WHITE WINE WILL RECEIVE THE ABOVE WINE &:

2016 QUINTA DE CHOCAPALHA – ARINTO - LISBOA, PORTUGAL - 91 Points Wine Advocate

Quinta de Chocapalha is located just northwest of Lisbon. Originally acquired in the 1980’s, the 110 acres of nearly abandoned vineyards discovered on the estate dated back to the 16th century; the family immediately embarked on an investment program to replant and regraft the vines with the thriving varietals of the area, both indigenous and international. In 2000, the new plantings had reached optimal maturity when Sandra Tavares, the youngest daughter made her first debut as a winemaker, passionate and eager to produce wine with only the best grapes found on the estate. Drawing from traditional and modern winemaking influences, Quinta de Chocapalha vinifies in traditional lagares (stone troughs for crushing grapes) yet employs the use of mechanical treaders during fermentation; this fine-tuned winemaking philosophy shines through in the wines. This wine boasts of both traditional minerality and elegance, while remaining fresh and fruit forward in essence. This month’s white wine is made with the native Portuguese white grape Arinto, planted primarily in Vinho Verde but can also make delicious wines in other regions such as Lisboa. This grape has also been known as Malvasia Fina. This wine is a pure expression of Arinto sourced from 26 year old vineyards. This refreshing white is vinified in stainless steel vats and aged for 5 months on the lees before bottling. A slow fermentation taking 27 days allows for the development of floral and citrus aromatics and the 5 months on the lees softens the bracing acidity of the Arinto grape. Chill this wine to 45F and enjoy the refreshing notes of Meyer lemon, pear, yellow apples and nectarines. The palate is very much reminiscent of the notes on the nose with crisp acidity and a lengthy finish. This wine pairs well with fresh salads, grilled white fish, and roasted chicken. $15.00

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO RED WINES RECEIVE ROCKWALL’S ROMANCER RED &:

2014 BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS RENACER – “PUNTO FINAL” CABERNET FRANC RESERVA - MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

Bodegas y Viñedos Renacer was founded by Patricio Reich, with the collaboration of world-renowned winemaker Alberto Antonini. Bodega Renacer prides itself in bringing consumers the very best wines from South America’s unique terroirs. The winery structure itself is quite impressive, featuring a medieval tower built of rocks with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment. Renacer’s vineyards are located in Perdriel, a unique zone in Mendoza, Argentina, where the soil, altitude, climate, and water come together to create the perfect growing environment for red grapes. And while they produce wines from grapes hailing from the old world, they use technology to help them thrive in Argentina. The winery uses GPS systems to map out each vineyard and their soils and weather micro climates so that each vineyard gets a customized treatments and irrigation to produce amazing wines like this one. The winemaker Patricio Reich, born in Chile, has a passion for wine with an extensive business experience (MBA and banking career before changing to a career in wine) has resulted in a modern and sophisticated winery that produces well-crafted, enjoyable wines that offer tremendous value. His wines have garnered praise from industry critics and publications worldwide, most notably Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. This month’s secondary red is Punto Final Reserva Cabernet Franc with grapes from two 15 year old vineyards, double hand-sorted prior to fermentation with native yeasts. Following fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged for one year in French oak barrels and then rests six months in the bottle before release. This deep and intense ruby colored wine opens with notes of black pepper, eucalyptus and fresh mint aromas that merge with notes of vanilla and chocolate. Soft touches of French oak provide complexity and elegance. It has a soft impact and velvety tannins on your palate. Fruity and spicy at the same time, these notes are typically found in a Cabernet Franc. Good body and concentration with a long and persistent finish. Allow this wine to breathe for ½ hour prior to consuming, then pair this with a variety of roasted or barbecued meats. The wine is an ideal partner for game or wintry stews. Rustic pastas and ripe cheeses also make an ideal pairing. $19.50

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE QUINTA DE CHOCAPALHA ARINTO &:

2016 CLAIRBORNE & CHURCHILL – DRY GEWÜRZTRAMINER - CENTRAL COAST, CALIFORNIA 90 Points Wine Enthusiast

Claiborne & Churchill is a small, premium family-owned winery in the Edna Valley of San Luis Obispo, founded in 1983 by Claiborne (Clay) Thompson and Fredericka Churchill Thompson. Former teachers at the University of Michigan, the couple left the “Groves of Academe” for the vineyards of California in 1981 in order to begin a new life in the wine industry. With its first crush Claiborne & Churchill announced its special focus, producing 565 cases of Dry Riesling and Dry Gewürztraminer, inspired by the fruity but dry dinner wines of the French province of Alsace. Today Claiborne & Churchill along with winemaker Coby Parker Garcia produce about 8,000 cases of wine each year, sourcing grapes from vineyards in the cool maritime valleys of California’s Central Coast and its own small estate vineyards. In 1995 Clay and Fredericka completed construction on their new and permanent winery building. This structure, a noteworthy example of environmental architecture, is a "straw bale building," the first of its kind in California. With sixteen-inch thick walls made of bales of rice straw, the winery is so well insulated that it maintains a constant cellar temperature, without the need for mechanical cooling or heating – well worth a visit next time you are on your way to Paso Robles or want to visit the amazing wineries of the central coast. The wine chosen for our wine club their 100% Gewürztraminer. Now this is not the old style of Gewurzt…this is dry, this is the kind that makes us long for Spicy Thai cuisine! Starting with lovely notes of fresh lychee and citrus. On the palate you’ll note the juicy pear, stone fruit and citrus peel flavors playing off one another while its subtle varietal spice must not go without mentioning. Since the grapes had a longer hang time and were picked slighly less ripe compared to previous vintages, this wine boasts a refreshing acidity, followed up with its famously dry finish. Crack open a bottle with spicy cuisine! $25.00
