2012 MARQUES DE GRIÑON - “CALIZA” RED BLEND - DO de Pago Dominio de Valdepusa, Spain

"Caliza", meaning limestone in Spanish, is used in naming this wine to pay homage to the unique soil profile at this Dominio de Valdepusa estate. The moderate layer of clay topsoil over rocky limestone leads to elegantly structured wines. Dominio de Valdepusa is a Denominación de Origen (DO) de Pago in Castilla-La Mancha, in the center of Spain, and is well known for Miguel de Cervantes’s novel The Adventures of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Dominio de Valdepusa has been in the family of the Marqués de Griñón Carlos Falcó since 1292. The family has played an integral part in Spanish culture for centuries. They are rooted in royalty, the military, and Spanish art and literature, including involvement in the publication of the first Spanish grammar book and Spanish-Latin dictionary.

Under the stewardship of Carlos Falcó, Dominio de Valdepusa has been on the leading edge of the Spanish wine industry for the past several decades. It is where Falcó introduced Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to Spain in 1974, shortly followed by the first experimentation with drip irrigation and night harvesting. Today, Falcó is considered a father of the Spanish wine industry. He is the author of the 18-volume “Entender de Vino”, the quintessential guide to Spanish winemaking. He is also known for founding the prestigious Grandes Pagos de España association, which recognizes exceptional wine-making properties across Spain. This month we selected their “Caliza” which is a turn-your-teeth purple blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot which is fermented in stainless steel followed by one year in new and second passage French oak. Deep purple in color with ruby reflections, this wine shows alluring notes of blackberries and cassis with undertones of cinnamon and minerality. On the palate, it is beautifully full-bodied and silky with refreshing acidity and flavors that unfold into the long-lasting finish. As the cool weather begins to wind down, this wine is a great one to sip by the fire. Open a bottle and decant it for ½ hour and enjoy it with top sirloin steak, prime rib, rich veggie dishes, or manchego cheese. $20.00

2017 J. MOURAT – “COLLECTION” WHITE BLEND- Loire Valley, France – ORGANICALLY FARMED GRAPES - NO OAK

Vignobles Mourat was created in 1974. The vineyards of J. Mourat are located to the south of the Loire valley within close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean so a maritime climate prevails. The vines are planned on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Lay valley, and is a gorgeous place to visit. This is an ancient land that was settled by the Romans who, thankfully, brought vines from Italy and planted them in Mareuil sur Lay to slay their thirst! The Mourat family are passionate about the special qualities that are to be found in the wines of this most southerly of Loire appellations. It is fair to say that they alone have been responsible for lifting the wines of the region from virtual obscurity. You will notice the shape of the bottle, which caught our attention, and it turns out that Mourat’s stout, flanged bottle is unique. They found an old bottle in the cellar of the estate and they had it reproduced just for themselves. Before the standardization of bottle shapes in the modern era, this was the typical bottle shape for wines of this region. The winery decided to keep the shape for their wines. The grapes for this delicious wine comes from 20 year old, organically farmed vines and is a blend of 50% Chenin Blanc and 50% Chardonnay, all fermented in stainless steel to bring out the freshness of the fruit. This is a vibrant, rich wine with aromas and flavors of citrus, apples and peaches. Bright and lasting notes will linger on your palate with juiciness. This wine will make a great pairing to spring vegetables, salads and seafood. $18.50

2015 CENTER OF EFFORT - “EFFORT” PINOT NOIR - Edna Valley, California

The Center of Effort estate lies in the western foothills of the Edna Valley, in the Central Coast about 35 miles south of Paso Robles. Here the growing conditions are shaped by a rare confluence of lean sandy soils, reliable maritime breezes, and nuanced exposures. Owners Bill Swanson and Rob Rossi acquired the vineyard and winery, with roots spanning three decades, precisely because of its potential to produce outstanding Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wine production team is led by Mike Sinor and Nathan Carlson, both veteran Edna Valley winemakers with a love for this place, and an appreciation for the character and potential of its produce. We met Nathan during the Chardonnay symposium where he impressed a table of some of California’s best producers of Chardonnay with his Edna Valley wines (Center of Effort, which you can buy at Anne’s). Their winemaking philosophy is to honor terroir, the natural character of the fruit, while bringing an added dimension of artistry to the wine. There is nothing expedient in their approach. They embrace the detailed, labor-intensive methods that are required to produce the finest wines. Even then, only a handful of lots from each vintage are ultimately deemed worthy for designation under the “Center of Effort” label. And it shows! This month’s secondary red is a delicious Pinot Noir, all estate fruit and each sub-block was separately hand-harvested, followed by small-lot fermentations with manual daily punchdowns for a balanced extraction of color and flavor. Aging took place over 11 months in partial new French oak. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration in order to retain the most authentic expression of their estate vineyard. This wine displays notes of ripe red plum, black and red cherries with a hint of earthiness. This vintage is particularly savory and is complex with lots of flavor layers and will evolve in your glass over the course of an evening. This Pinot will make a great wine for roasted pork and grilled vegetables, mushroom risotto, or even duck confit. If you prefer to have it with cheese, try a mushroom brie. $28.99

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE J MOURAT - “COLLECTION” &:

2016 VIÑA ZORZAL - GARNACHA BLANCA (WHITE GRENACHE) -Navarra, Spain - ORGANIC FARMING

Viña Zorzal is located in the Southern part of the Navarra DO, very close to the border with Rioja. In fact, they farm some vines in Rioja as well. They were founded by Antonio Sanz in 1989. The idea has always been sustainability and a return to historical grape varieties. With the coming of age of his three sons, Xabier, Iñaki, and Mikel, the winery Viña Zorzal was born. Like so many father/son stories, the children have adopted the idea of the father and taken it further. The farming is now organic and the focus is on making higher quality, site specific wines that respect history but also look to a brighter future. For the secondary white choice, we selected their white Grenache. The Garnacha vineyards have unique quality factors: they are in the hills, bordering between Ebro valley and Iberian mountains, and are bush vines in higher altitude with continental climate and stony soiI, which gives them ideal conditions for this grape. They harvest in the coolest hours of the evening, then the juice is fermented in stainless steel and allowed to age in large, neutral oak barrels for 4 months, then the wine is bottled. This refreshing wine is bursting with notes of both citrus and stone fruits such as peach and apricot with crisp acidity and soft mineral notes. This wine is dry and fresh with medium body and a long finish. Chill this wine and serve it with fresh pasta, rice dishes, lemon and aromatic herb seasoned poultry $20.00
