2014 VIÑA HERMINIA – “EXCELSIUS” RIOJA - RIOJA, SPAIN

Located in the Rioja Baja, at the southeastern end of the Rioja, Viña Herminia is run and owned by Emilio Lustau. The winery produces a full range of Rioja wines, all from the unmistakable warmer climate of the region, which produces rich, generous, fruity wines of enormous appeal. Respected Australian winemaker David Morrison is behind these delicious wines, and his influence on quality is immediately evident. The primary red is a Rioja wine with a delicious blend of 50% Tempranillo, and 50% Garnacha, aged in French oak barrel for 8 months and followed by time in the bottle of six months to allow all the flavors to mature. All this makes this wine an intense red cherry color with purple hints. Fresh and complex on the nose. Blackberry and plum aromas with rich and smooth oak undertones. On the palate it is rich, round and well balanced, with lingering finish. This wine is an excellent companion to red meats, cured cheeses or game dishes. Amazing when paired with dark chocolate too. This wine is drinking well now but will continue to evolve for the next three to four years.

2015 ERCOLE – MONFERRATO DOC WHITE - MONFERRATO DOC (PIEDMONT) ITALY 

Weston Hoard spent four years living in Piedmont and working for the renowned Barolo winery Paolo Scavino. The opportunity to work alongside the Scavinos in the vineyards and the cellar contributed profoundly to his understanding of wine production in the heart of Piedmont. Evolving in his role with Scavino, Weston became the liaison between the winery and their importers in the United States, Asia, and Scandinavia. Upon his return to the United States in 2011, Weston channeled his experience in Italy into a new solo project called The Piedmont Guy. The sole charge of this niche importing company is bringing the great wines of Piedmont to the United States but soon after he decided to make his own wine. During his years working in the cellars and the vineyards, Hoard was always accompanied by his dog Ercole; fate would one day separate them, but this wine is Hoard’s tribute to Ercole. Made primarily from the Cortese grape (90%) that is a native of Piedmont, and he blends in 10% Chardonnay. This white is light with notes of yellow apples, peaches and Meyer lemons. Bright acid and minerality to enhance the structure and mouthfeel. This wine finishes dry with tones of ripe soft fruit on the palate. This wine comes in a generous 1 liter bottle, allowing you to have one extra glass of this delicious Spring worthy wine. This wine is a delicious paring to goat cheese (Chevre), grilled fish and asparagus as a side dish, or even fish tacos.

2016 MAURO MOLINO – BARBERA D’ALBA - BARBERA D'ALBA (PIEDMONT) ITALY - ORGANIC FARMING

Mauro Molino, who founded the estate in 1973, graduated from enology school in Alba. Before he headed to Piedmont to make wine in his native land, he spent five years honing his winemaking experience in Emilia, Romagna. In 1979 after his father’s passing, he returned home to the family farm in La Morra and began consulting for local wineries while building up his own estate. 1982 was the first vintage from the famed family parcel in Conca dell’Annunziata. The quality of the wines has led to both the popularity of his wines and acclaim from the critics. In 2003 Matteo, his son joined the company and became the managing force behind the wines. Then in 2009, Matteo’s sister Martina also joined the team and together they manage approximately 30 acres of vineyards. They proudly practice sustainable viticulture, which include organic farming of all their grapes. This wine is made with 100% Barbera grapes, and the vineyards are located in one of the most recognized appellations within Piedmont; a region where many of the best vineyard sites are dedicated to Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. An appellation which limits the quality and quantities of the wines labeled with the Barbera d'Alba DOC, which leads producers to bottle the best Barbera and in limited quantities. This wine is pleasant and fresh thanks to its good acidity and juicy fruit. With fantastic notes of black and blueberries and hints of chocolate. Mellow tannins and bright acidity with a lengthy finish. A fresh wine offering good softness and lingering finish. Ideal in combination with pasta, pizza, BBQ and spicy food. A wine suitable for almost every pairing.

2016 NEUDORF – SAUVIGNON BLANC - NELSON, NEW ZEALAND

92 James Suckling – Organic Farming 

Tim and Judy Finn planted their first vines in 1978 when the renaissance of the New Zealand wine industry was in its infancy. Over the years, the Finn family, has established an enviable international reputation for outstanding cool climate wines with drive and finesse. The Neudorf home vineyards are situated in the clay gravel Moutere Hills at the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. They spill down a gentle, north-facing slope, with mountain ranges to the east, south and west providing shelter. The beautiful Tasman Bay to the north ensures a maritime climate, with the diurnal temperatures increasing away from the coast. Nelson has the most sunshine hours in New Zealand, and summers are long and warm, with night temperatures cooling towards harvest. The vines are closely planted, dry-farmed, and organic. In New Zealand, the wines are strongly sought after and with just 74 acres under vine, the volume exported are extremely limited. The winery aims to produce wines with finesse as their priority. An overall philosophy of minimal intervention along with stainless steel fermentation, aging in neutral oak, and minimal fining or filtration. Tthis Sauvignon Blanc wine is dry with excellent concentration and length. In the glass, the wine is a pale straw color with brilliant clarity. Vibrant and vivacious aromas of cream and lime preface a tropical and floral palate. The flavors are bright and plentiful, with a textured mouthfeel and an intriguing flintiness that develops into a long lasting finish. Serve this wine chilled with fresh fish, white meat dishes, soft cheeses, or high acid driven meals (think vinaigrette salads).
