2016 HERENCIA ALTES – GARNATXA NEGRA - Terra Alta DO (Catalunya), Spain – Certified Organic Farming (CCPAE)

Nuria Altés is the winemaker, and like many young vintners in Spain, comes from a family who have grown grapes for generations. Tucked away in a remote corner of Catalunya, Nuria’s project, Herència Altés is situated in the appellation of Terra Alta. Remarkably Terra Alta is one of the largest wine growing regions in Catalunya and one of which few are aware – something Nuria has set about changing. Having grown up among the vines that her grandfather tended, Nuria has known these vineyards since her childhood and made the decision in 2010 to start purchasing grapes from her father to make her own personal wines. The soils in these vineyards are referred to as Panal – a chalky and sandy topsoil over deep, clay-limestone all underpinned by limestone bedrock. Panal is naturally low in nutrients with a tremendous capacity for storing water which is important for the wines as the summers are warm and dry and almost always windy. In addition, the vineyards are also located at elevations of approximately 1500 feet above sea level, which allows for full maturation of the grapes at lower alcohol levels and with higher acidity. And we love that you’ll get a great example of this with this month’s primary red, the indigenous Garnatxa Negra (Garnacha), the area’s most planted red variety and by the way Nuria’s favorite. This bottle contains a blend of old and young vine fruit that ferments and ages in concrete vats. This creates a lively, and elegant version of Garnatxa showcasing the enticing notes of red cherries, raspberries, and hints of black tea leaves. On the palate, this wine has a medium body, mellow and silky tannins, along with bright acidity that carries the notes of raspberries and mild spice through to the very long finish. This wine is a delicious summer red that will take you from Summer grilling red as well as white meats that are seasoned with a bit of spice. Open about ½ hour prior to serving and serve at 60F, ideal red wine temperature!

2016 STADT KREMS – GRUNER VELTLINER - Kremstal (Niederoesterreich), Austria

A delicious wine with a super cool history. Established in 1452, the original purpose of this winery was to provide revenue for the hospital in Krems, and it is still to this day the only winery owned by a city. All 75 acres of vineyards held by Weingut Stadt Krems are within the city limits. With over 550 years of history, Weingut Stadt Krems is one of the oldest wine producers in Europe. Since July 2003, the estate is managed by a young, innovated team directed by Fritz Miesbauer. All the vineyards are located in the Krems Valley, a small area defined by the excellent soil and optimal conditions for growing the famed Grüner Veltliner. Grüner Veltliner is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. But the most revered comes from this region of Austria. Today Fritz and his team produce wines with a clean fresh profile that are enjoyable to drink, and are typical of the region. And that’s what you’ll get in this delicious wine. Made with 100% Gruner Veltliner grapes, and hand-harvested at the end of September. Fermented and aged in large, stainless steel tanks to maintain purity of fruit. Wines were released eight months following fermentation. Get ready for a summer ready white wine…with fresh and fruity aromas reminiscent of citrus fruits, celery and a hint of white pepper. The flavors on the palate are consistent with the aromas and the finish is fresh and crisp. A classic Grüner Veltliner from Kremstal, not too heavy but not too light. This wine should be enjoyed young with typical Asian cuisine, but is also versatile enough to accompany fresh salads. The best pairing is grilled fish accompanied by the ever so hard-to-pair asparagus or artichokes. Delish!!

2015 LUIGI GIORDANO – LANGHE ROSSO - Langhe DOC (Piedmont), Italy

Piedmont is one of Italy’s most prestigious and distinctive region for red wines. Piedmont is responsible for some of the country’s longest-lived, most sought-after red wines. Growing some of the most food geared wines, including the most prized variety, Nebbiolo, named for the region’s fog (“nebbia” in Italian). The Luigi Giordano’s small family winery is situated in Barbaresco, among the hills that frame the Tanaro river’s sinuous course, at the very heart of Piedmont. Luigi cultivates traditional local varietals on his estate and produces wine from them in his cellar. Luigi Giordano is now a fourth-generation winery whose vineyards are planted in some of Barbaresco’s most prestigious vineyards. And they make this delicious red from 90% Nebbiolo and they add 10% Roero Arneis, (yes a white grape), a traditional blend of the region. The grapes are hand-harvested, then are followed by fermentation. After the racking and the initial period of clarification, the wine matures for 3-4 months in oak casks, then is refined in bottles for at least 3 months. This enticing wine has a ruby core with a lighter edge. The aromas are unmistakably Nebbiolo with dried rose petal notes, red berries, leather and a hint of spices. This wine is just bordering on full-bodied, with tannins that are evident, yet silky smooth. The palate is full of complex notes of hints of red cherries, crisp dried flowers, dried plum and red jam. The acid carries the flavors and makes the mouth water, then at the end you get a bit of a spicy finish. This wine is elegant, well balanced and made to pair with food! Serve this wine slightly cooler than most reds at 55F and pair it with a plate of charcuterie, pasta dishes, pizza, or other foods that have as their strongest flavor of butter and/or sage. This is also great with the casual sandwich any day of the week!

2015 FOSSIL POINT – CHARDONNAY - Central Coast, California SIP Certified (Organic & Sustainable

This wine is made by one of our favorite producers of Chardonnay, Nathan Carlson, who also produces Center of Effort Wines…a pricier brand which we also carry at Anne’s. Fossil Point wines are all made with grapes from the Central Coast and the name is an homage to the vineyards from where the fruit is sourced. The vineyards are in close proximity to the cold Pacific Ocean, and on soils that are composed of coarse sand and calcareous shales uplifted from the ancient seafloor and weathered into place over millennia. They use sustainable farming methods and are certified by SIP, a system that goes beyond just Organic Certification ( The winemaking is hands-on, small scale, and attentive to the individual needs of each lot of grapes and has the honed in style of winemaking that has made Nathan a force in the Chardonnay winemaking game. This particular Chardonnay is made with fruit from both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, fermented in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels while on the lees to give that rich texture you will be sure to enjoy!! If you like Chardonnay, you are going to love this wine as it is not only a deliciously fresh, crisp classic Chardonnay but it is an amazing value!! This wine invites you in with the tropical notes of ripe mango, citrus, pineapple, and white flowers. The flavors are going to make your mouth water, as it reminds us of Meyer lemon and pineapple. This wine is a fantastic choice to pair with oysters, mussels, or fresh summer salads. If you enjoy cheese, try a soft goat cheese or a brie on a freshly toasted baguette!
