Please bear in mind that due to rising costs the tasting for wine club members starting in August is now $5.00 per person for this even, and you can get another person into the tasting for this price. 2016 ROCK WALL WINES – “CUVEE EXCEPTIONNELLE” ZINFANDEL - CALIFORNIA

We love nothing more than bringing you hidden gems, and this is a great one! This zinfandel is another wine made by the amazing collaboration of the winemaking duo of Shauna and Kent Rosemblum. Kent (dubbed the “King of Zin”) and his talented daughter Shauna (woman winemaker of the year 2013 – Women’s Wine Competition) partner up in Alameda to produce wines from vineyards that Ken began purchasing grapes from staring in 1978. Back in the day it was known as “Rosenblum Cellars” and it opened in Alameda, California, a place known more for its docks and shipyards than for winemaking. But then again, Kent Rosenblum, always did things a little differently from the status quo. Kent and Shauna make wines from lesser-known and underappreciated grapes and grape-growing areas of Northern California. Together they grow some grapes and purchase grapes from families who have been growing grapes for generations. In 2008 Kent sold his eponymous winery and started Rock Wall Winery and taught his intrepid daughter to refine what she had already began learning in her childhood…to make delicious wines. Calling herself a “cellar rat” Shauna proves that the apple does not fall far from the tree. This wine is a true representation of that. The Cuvee Exceptionnelle is a 100% Zinfandel, a blend created from small lots of Zinfandel grown all over Northern California. The fruit comes from Sonoma Valley, Lake County and Contra Costa County. This blend characterizes a refined and elegant style, with the most complimentary favor profiles from distinctly different AVA’s to make this cuvee intricate, and layered with the best Zinfandel characteristics. In short, a little of what Shauna and Ken love about Zinfandel is in each lot. Each lot was fermented separately and aged in French oak barrels, mainly neutral to allow the grape’s gifts to come through. Once the wine was fermented, Ken and Shauna began to test out blends till they hit the nail on the head with the exceptional wine that you will be enjoying. This wine just makes us happy with its inviting notes of strawberry jam, white pepper and marshmallow and then gives way to flavors of raspberry, blackberry pie, ripe cherry, cinnamon and nutmeg. In this heat, serve the wine at about 60F, then pair it with BBQ ribs, burgers, or chocolate molten cake with raspberries. 2017 MAUDE – PINOT GRIS - CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND - SUSTAINABLE FARMING

Yes Pinot Gris (or Grigio) from New Zealand and we think that this white wine will delight you! Refreshing and perfect for warm summer days. Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, New Zealand is where we find Sarah-Kate and Dan Dineen, winemakers and owners of the Maude wine label. Both Sarah and Dan had prestigious winemaking careers in Australia but family ties and desire to grow Pinot Noir took them to Central Otago where they could join forces with Sarah’s vineyard owning parents. The family was excited by the opportunity to combine Sarah-Kate and Dan's strongly held belief in sourcing grape varieties from the regions that they best perform in, complimenting the exquisite small quantities of single vineyard fruit that Sarah’s parents produce at their Mount Maude vineyard. And from this vineyard the name of the winery was born. Here is where they began to produce wines that showcase very best of New Zealand's wine growing regions, with this Pinot Gris and their Central Otago Pinot Noir (available at Anne’s). For our primary white wine offering of August we chose their 2017 Pinot Gris. Hand harvested from four vineyards in Central Otago. One being the family vineyard, Mt Maude in Wanaka, the balance from vineyards they work closely with on Maori Point Rd, Lowburn and Gibbston Valley. 60 % of the juice is fermented in stainless steel contributing to the delicate and pure aromatics in the wine. The remaining 40% is fermented in older oak barriques giving viscosity and texture. Combining the parcels creates a Pinot Gris of both aromatic and textural delight. This wine has aromas of pear, summer peaches and rose petal florals. The palate is full with poached pear and spice flavors, yet finishes crisp, clean and precise. This wine will make a great sipping wine on a Sunday afternoon paired with soft cheeses (Brie, goat cheese) or a fish grilled topped off with fresh mango salsa. $24.50

2016 SIMONE SCALETTA – DOLCETTO D’ALBA - ALBA DOC (PIEDMONT), ITALY

Simone Scaletta stands tall amongst a generation of new winemakers in Piedmont. Without any family holdings in Barolo, he boldly ditched his day job in Turin and set out to build a stunning winery in the heart of Monforte d’Alba. For eight years, Simone lived out of a van as he constructed his dream cellar. Hard-driving and zealous, Simone approaches winemaking with an unmistakable joie de vivre. Today, the boundlessly energetic winemaker oversees 12 acres of Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo in Bussia and Bricco San Pietro. Simone Scaletta bottled his first vintage in 2003, and the sky appears to be the limit for this emerging winemaker. Simone feels that farming a small area allows him to dedicate attention and focus every single activity that tending to vineyards require. The position, the climate, the land and the hard work give a unique expression to every single vineyard. The pruning, the meticulous selection of the grapes fully respect nature’s times and are made with a technical consciousness that respects quality. This wine is made with 100% Dolcetto. The Dolcetto grape is one of the principal grapes grown in Piedmont and a favorite there among both winemakers and consumers. “Dolcetto” translates to “little sweet one”- not because it is a sweet wine (it is perfectly dry) - because it is a friendly and easygoing grape to work with and so pleasurable in the glass. And that it is!! Dolcetto is one of those grape types like Barbera that Barolo producers like to grow to make wines that they can consume on a daily basis while their longer-to-produce, and more expensive Barolos are aging. But that doesn’t mean that care and love didn’t go into this wine, because it did!! Simone ferments in temperature-controlled steel tanks for about 7 days, he then follows that with malolactic fermentation to round out the flavors of the wine. The wine then ages for 6-9 months in concrete tanks before being bottled without fining or filtration. Finally, the wine rests for an additional 3 months in bottle prior to release. This wine is a delightful, rich red color with tinge of purple. Distinctive aromas of fresh blueberry and violets and even a hint of black pepper. Very pleasant on the palate, finishing with a lengthy flavors reminiscent of plums. This is a great value wine for an everyday style of drinking, which is a reminder to drink plenty of it and drink it young. Drink at about 60F and pair it with Osso Buco, a summer antipasto, or even pizza. $21.00

2017 DOCIL (A Dirk Neipoort Project) – LOUIREIRO VINHO VERDE - VINHO VERDE, PORTUGAL

We first became acquainted with the winemaker Dirk Neipoort many years ago through his eponymous ports and in the film “A Year in Port” where he is featured as one of the winemakers sharing harrowing winemaking stories in the country of Portugal. After he left the Port house he began other projects and then ran into him in (of all places) Macau, China where we discovered that he is now making wine in other Portuguese regions. His wines are delicious and we knew we had to have them in the shop! So upon returning to the US our tasting team went to work to find out who distributes his delicious wines and we found them. We highly recommend you watch “A Year in Port” to see how this winemaker is impressive in his drive to make wine. This however is our opportunity to tell you about this summer thirst quencher. Made with 100% Loureiro grapes, which is native to Vinho Verde (Northern Coastal Portugal – name means Young Wine). Dirk wanted a white wine that would reflect the region’s terroir and whose vinification would rely on the balance, structure and vibrant acidity of the Loureiro grape variety. This wine accomplishes it with its aromatic, fruity citrus and floral notes delightful in the foreground but are beautifully contained by the elegance and finesse of the wine. On the palate, the wine reveals its aromatic freshness as well as well-balanced flavors, ending in a long and mineral finish. This wine has the flavor profile of a ripe granny smith apple, crisp and deliciously refreshing. This wine is a perfect partner to a summer light fare. Vinho Verdes go best with fresh, young cheeses, especially the goaty kind. Think farmer’s cheese, chèvre, or small bloomy-rind cheeses—with or without a dusting of herbs and spices. Or even a summer fruit salad! $15.99
