WINE CLUB MEMBERS WHO RECEIVE (1 RED & 1 WHITE WINE) WILL ENJOY:
2017 DOMAINE DES POTHIERS – COTE ROANNAISE RED
Cote Roannaise (Loire Valley), France – CERTIFIED ORGANIC – NO ADDED SULFITES
The Côte Roannaise is one of the hidden gems of the Loire Valley, located in its southern region. It is situated on hillsides overlooking the Loire on granitic soils. Domaine des Pothiers is one of the oldest estates in the appellation. The Paire family has been here for over 300 years; as well as tending 22 acres of vines, the family also raises cattle. They are certified organic since 2010, and also practice biodynamic farming. The grapes are handpicked, stemmed or not depending on the vintages, and the fermentation starts thanks to the indigenous yeasts of the grape and without adding sulfites. The natural and meticulous winemaking creates gourmet wines where the fruit of the Gamay and the minerality of the granite are expressed. The wine selected for this month’s primary red is their red made with 100% Gamay. The grapes from their granite laden vineyards. For this vintage, 2/3 of the grape clusters were destemmed, half of the juice was fermented in a concrete tank and half in a large wooden tank, and no carbonic maceration as is normally typical with this varietal of wine in other appellations. This results with a delicious wine with more tannic structure than you would expect from a Gamay. We love this red at Anne’s, it displays lovely notes of fresh tart cherries, cranberries, and raspberries and on the palate those fruits are repeated with fresh acidity, medium body, and a hint of black pepper on the finish. This wine makes a great pairing to Indian cuisine, roast turkey, Mexican cuisine, or even a casual pizza.
CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE 1 RED WINE & 1 WHITE WINE WILL ENJOY DOMAINE POTHIERS &:
2016 DOMAINE DE L’ORVIEL - VIOGNIER
Pays des Cévennes (Rhône Valley), France – SUSTAINABLE FARMING
At the foot of the Cévennes Mountains is where we find the Domaine de l'Orviel, or "old gold" in the historical language of Oc, that extends over 60 acres. Their vineyards are all hillside exposure, with soil composed of clay and limestone and days full of sun, all leading to perfect grape growing conditions. They practice sustainable farming and have for decades before it became a “word” in the wine world. Jean-Pierre Cabane, the winemaker created his own wine cellar to develop a wine that fits perfectly with the beauty of the region and we think he nailed it. Each vintage, he limits the production of the wine to make wine from only the best grapes he harvests from the estate vineyards. The grapes are picked manually for sufficient freshness. The wine is fermented at colder temperatures and also matured in temperature- controlled stainless-steel tanks. This wine is 100% Viognier, and it is a beautiful contrast to most widely available California Viognier. With light yellow color and enticing aromas of ripe fruit, apples, nectarines, and peaches alongside notes of white flowers. On the palate all these notes repeat along with intriguing mineral notes, zippy acid with Mediterranean herbs on the finish. This wine has a delicious fruity and full aftertaste that lingers for a long time due to the pleasant structure. Although just over 330 cases were produced, only about 50 cases reached the US. Enjoy this wine as an alternative to Chardonnay and pair it with foods seasoned with Mediterranean spices like Turmeric and/or ginger. Root veggies or your favorite shellfish. We love lobster with garlic butter to accompany this wine.
CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE 2 RED WINES RECEIVE DOMAINE POTHIERS RED &
2014 JOAO PORTUGAL RAMOS – « MARQUES DE BORBA » TINTO
Alentejo, Portugal – BIODYNAMIC WINE
João Portugal Ramos is Portugal’s most famous winemaker. Before he began making his own wines, he was a pioneering wine consultant widely considered Portugal’s Pierro Antinori or Emile Peynaud. His many accolades include winning 2010 Personality of the Year and 2006 Producer of the Year (Essencia do Vinho); 2010 Viticulture Team of the Year, 2000 Winemaker of the Year, and 1998 Company of the Year (Revista de Vinhos); 1999 & 2004 Winemaker of the Year and 2004 Producer of the Year (Vin & Mat, Sweden); 2004 Newcomer of the Year (Wein Gourmet, Germany); and the 2008 Prize for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture) and on and on. In the decades that Ramos has consulted, he almost single-handedly opened Portuguese winemaking to the benefits of modern technologies with an emphasis on low yields, occasional oak aging, and the preservation of a grape’s natural fruit flavors. In 1990, he decided it was time to start creating his own wine and he began planting vineyards in Alentejo around his new winery, Vila Santa. J. Portugal Ramos’s is where his 1250 acres of vineyard are located near the ancient marble-filled town of Estremoz in Alentejo. The schist and limestone-clay soil, combined with the region’s Continental climate, create ideal conditions for growing grapes. This is where he grows the grapes for this delicious wine, a blend of Aragonêz, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak for four months. This bold red is deep red in color, with excellent aromatic concentration with aromas of black fruit, cassis, and black berry preserves. The tannins are smooth on the palate and give way to a lovely and lengthy finish. This is a summer ready red that pairs well with barbeque (dry rubs and sweet sauces), and soft cheese like a “petite breakfast brie”.
CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE L’ORVIEL VIOGNIER &:
2017 HUNTAWAY RESERVE – SAUVIGNON BLANC
Marlborough, New Zealand – Certified Sustainable Winemaking
Named after the native New Zealand sheepdog, Huntaway has distinguished herding and working ability like no other breed. Huntaway Reserve focuses on Marlborough’s signature varietal, Sauvignon Blanc. They select vineyard blocks that reflect the distinctive, natural characters in lower Wairau Valley which produces a wine with distinct pungency and power. Launched in 1996, Huntaway has been successful in gathering critical acclaim, awards and a fine reputation for quality. Winemaker Matt Large (former Kim Crawford head winemaker) focuses on Certified Sustainable New Zealand Winegrowing so that the best of the vineyards come through in each sip without harming the environment. This lovely white wine is aromatic, full palate weight, clean acid with notes of white and pink grapefruit, tomato leaf aromatics with underlying herbal notes, creating layers of complex savory notes. The wines power follows through to the palate displaying lovely fruit concentration balanced with chalky mineral acidity. This is a great wine for Asian cuisine, salads with balsamic and/or citrus dressings. Oysters or just to sip by the pool. This is a super quaffable wine for the heat of summer!
