2010 EQUIS – “EQUINOXE” CROZES-HERMITAGE – CROZES HERMITAGE, FRANCE (RHONE VALLEY)
Equis wines is a father/son project based on their mutual love for and admiration of Syrah's potential. Based in Crozes-Hermitage, they produce artisanal wines with the true expression of terroir. Equis situated between the Rhône and Isère rivers; soils rich with the components to grow darker more concentrated grapes. The winery only grows grapes that are native to the regions, to achieve true flavors of the region to showcase to the world. ‘Equinoxe’ is made from young vines, and is 100% Syrah. The clusters are between 80-100% de-stemmed, and fermented in concrete open topped tanks. The wine is aged 6 months in 50% Stainless Steel tanks and 50% in 6 year old barrels. This wine is a great introduction to yet another aspect of the Rhone Valley, with bright purple color, smoky dark berries on the nose, with a hint of dried violet and subtle gaminess. Fleshy and smooth in texture, offering gently chewy black raspberry and mulberry flavors. Light spiciness and finishes with lovely licorice note. Decant for 1 hour and pair with roasted rack of lamb or if you’re in a casual mood, have it with a Olive topped pizza, the combination is fantastic! $21.99 – This month 15% discount for all wine club members: $18.69
2009 BODEGAS PASO ROBLES – “DOÑA BLANCA” ALBARIÑO – PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA
Dorothy Schuler, the proprietor, was once a writer, which certainly seems a world far away from wine. The idea for a winery began with her husband, and Dorothy was only going to be involved in doing some of the paperwork. Yet when her husband was called to work overseas, Dorothy rose up to the challenge, locating a mentor who taught her how to make wine, especially Iberian-style wines. She was one of the first local wine makers to use Tempranillo in Paso Robles. When we sampled this white blend here at Anne’s we knew that we not only found a tasty wine but also a unique one. This wine is made from two white grapes 60% Grenache Blanc, and 40% Malvasia Bianca. Malvasia Bianca is an ancient grape native to Greece, but it has been grown in Spain for hundreds of years. Winemakers there have been blending it with Grenache Blanc for centuries. The Grenache Blanc and Malvasia were fermented in tank and neutral French oak barrels for five months. This wine is named after two Queens of Navarre (circa 1150 and 1468). Upon opening this bottle you will notice the bright fresh aromas of white flowers and peaches. The floral bouquet of this wine is all Malvasia, while the dry, crisp finish belongs to the Grenache Blanc. This is a perfect sipping wine, we are sure you will find this wine delightful! 2006 BODEGAS RAMON BILBAO – “THE CHARGE” RIOJA – RIOJA, SPAIN
La Báscula has two meanings in Spanish: - it’s an old fashioned weighing scales or a large weighbridge for lorries. When deciding what to call their new Spanish wine range Ed Adams and Bruce Jack chose the first definition on the basis that a weighbridge would not look so good on a wine label. So, the scales represent balance. The wines are made with indigenous Spanish varieties and modern winemaking, a balance between New World dynamism and tradition of the old. This month’s secondary red was crafted with excellent red berry and spicy fruit with refreshing acidity balanced by fine vanilla flavors from oak maturation. The Charge red is made from grapes from all over the Rioja region - 70% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 5% of the enigmatic Graciano. 7 different vineyard blocks were used and the wine was aged for an average 9 months in a variety of French and American oak barrels. This wine is choc-full of fall aromas such as baking spices and even a bit reminiscent of macaroons. Full bodied yet silky tannins will delight you with dark berry flavors and lovely finish. Open this wine and allow it to breathe for about ½ hour, and then pair with BBQ pork ribs, in a more casual atmosphere try it with Manchego cheese, and if you’re up for the challenge, make some Paella! $14.99 – this month this wine is discounted 15% for wine club members, priced at: $12.74
White Only wine club members receive the Bodegas Paso Robles – Doña Blanca:
2010 PIERCE RANCH VINEYARDS - ALBARIÑO
Pierce Ranch Vineyards is a small production, family-owned winery centered in southern Monterey County's San Antonio Valley. Their wines are limited-run, estate-grown with an emphasis on Spanish and Portuguese varieties. As a smaller operation that approaches winemaking in artisan manner by handcrafting each lot. Carefully tailoring oak regimens to specific varietals and experimenting with different types of oak also help to add complexity to the finished product. This wine became part of the wine club party because it is unusual to see a California Albarino and because it truly is a good wine. Light bodied and with a crisp acidity, its aromas of slate, ripe apricot, and minerals on the nose give way to white stone fruit and Meyer lemon, with a touch of viscosity on the finish. Its minerality leads to a finish that makes you want more! This wine is very nice as an aperitif, or pair with with shellfish, particularly mussels, it also serves as an attractive accompaniment to salads and lighter first courses. $15.99 – this month’s price to wine club members: $13.59 – Only 410 cases were made of this wine.
