Founders Philippe and Bonnie Girardet established this European-style winery in 1971 with an intuition that the land would be perfect and resemble those of best vineyard lands of Europe. Over the years they have been proven right; the site features an ideal microclimate on the Umpqua Valley (south of Eugene) in Oregon. Philippe learned the art of winemaking back home in Switzerland. He used this knowledge of Old World ways to craft his own wines here in Oregon. Girardet’s first vintage of commercially released wines hit the shelves in 1983, and received two silver medals. Now in charge is second generation Winemaker, Marc Girardet, who learned the winemaking tradition from his father Philippe—at age 24 he was the youngest in the state, and for over 10 years has been carrying on the passion for handcrafting extraordinary wines. When we sampled the range of wines from Girardet, we immediately thought of these wines for our wine club - great value, fantastic flavors, and made by passionate winemakers. Our primary red this month is their master blend of 14 grape varieties, which even though we tried as hard as we could, they would not disclose the list of grapes used. This wine is winemaker’s Marc Girardet’s rendition of Founder Philippe Girardet’s original recipe dating back to 1982. It was originally known as the Vin Maison Rouge and more recently the Grand Rouge. What we can tell you is that the fruit is from their 35 acres of estate vineyards and are farmed using sustainable methods. The vines are always hand-harvested and pruned. The grapes are fermented with 30% whole berries in small fermenting vats and the wine is aged from 1 to 4 years in neutral oak to retain the fresh berry notes. This wine has a dense, garnet color, opening with toasty aromas of strawberry and mocha. Bright flavors of blackberry and cinnamon in the mid-palate lead into a pleasing finish with chocolate and peppery notes. This is one of those wines that only needs a about ½ hour to breathe before consuming and when you do, pair it with lasagna, or barbecued meats or try it with garlic dishes or Easter lamb as well as ham. This wine retails for $19.99

Mazzoni is owned by two distinguished winemaking families. The Franceschi (Montalcino) and Terlato (Napa), they have partnered to bring their expertise in grape varietals from their own region. The Franceschi family has produced prestigious Brunello di Montalcino for generations, while the Terlatos produce the outstanding Napa Valley wines. Both of these wines are widely respected in the world today. This Super Tuscan refers to a wine made from a blend of grapes of both Italian and outside origin. This wine is made from hand-harvested Vermentino (75%) and Chardonnay (25%) all fermented in stainless steel tanks and allowed to settle for 5 months on the lees in order to intensify the complexity of the flavors. This lovely wine is straw-yellow in color, on the nose it shows aromas of ripen pears and apples, with a mineral component and a spicy note. On the palate it is fine, elegant, savory, with the right acidity and the structure that recalls its Tuscan origin. Serve this wine at 43F with seafood appetizers and main dishes, white meats and medium aged cheeses, for example a Pecorino cheese. $19.99

Fantinel was founded in 1969 by well known and admired hotelier and restaurateur Mario Fantinel, who was driven to produce wines that would defy the expectations of his tasteful clientele. In 1973 Mario’s sons acquired some of the finest vineyards in Collio, Grave, and Colli Orientali as well as opening a wine bar in San Daniele del Friuli. At the turn of the millennium, the third generation of the family - embarked on further expansion, and today a wide array of Fantinel products are enjoyed around the world, and that expansion is how we came across this unusual yet delicious Cabernet Sauvignon. And as you’ll taste, yes Italy does produce some fantastic Cabernet wines. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and all is estate fruit and while the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks, it does get aging in neutral French oak for six months. This elegant wine is deep ruby red in color, with a tendency towards violet. There are intense aromas of berries and cooking spices. The palate is chock full of beautiful notes of berries with excellent acidity and body with a pleasantly dry taste. This wine will have you reaching for more. Pair this wine with dishes based on red meat, roasts, game, and aged cheeses. This wine retails for $15.99

White Only wine club members receive the Mazzoni – Bianco di Toscano :
We enjoyed the wines from Girardet and we loved their value, which is why we bring you two of their wines in the March wine club. This wine is a marriage of opportunity and winemaking artistry - when winemaker Marc Girardet noticed that a bit of botrytis (aka "Noble Rot") was forming on his fruit due to some foggy mornings around harvest time in 2011. He brought in an early round of fruit to capture notes of freshness and acidity, then left some clusters to hang and raisin, developing that rich ripeness that only botrytis can impart. Entirely fermented in stainless steel. The finished product is 11.5 percent alcohol by volume and a total steal for the price. We think this wine is a great aperitif at Easter or easily paired with salads or a fruit and cheese platter. Serve this at 42F. This wine retails for $17.99
