2013 VISTALBA – “CORTE C” RED BLEND – VISTALBA-LUJAN DE CUYO (MENDOZA), ARGENTINA
Wineries in Argentina are at an exciting stage! With prime climate conditions, talented people at the helm with influence and knowledge from both the new and old world, they are making a mark on the world of wine, and with very impressive prices to boot! This wine is made by a winery that exemplifies that, Bodega Vistalba was founded in 2002 by Carlos Pulenta, following the Bordeaux chateaux model to create sophisticated blends with incredible aging potential. All wines are sourced from his estate in the sub-appellation of Vistalba in the Lujan de Cuyo region of Mendoza. Bodega Vistalba is the only winery permitted to use the Vistalba appellation in its name. This month’s selection of red is a delicious blend of 80% Malbec and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes are harvested manually and then are fermented in concrete tanks, 20% of the wine was aged in French Oak barrels for 12 months, and aged in bottle for an additional 6 months. This wine is very inviting after opening but does benefit from decanting. The wine is brimming with ripe and delicious notes of blackberries, blueberries, baking spices vanilla and black cherries. The palate is lush and elegant with plenty of texture and the good acidy and a lengthy finish. This wine can be cellared up to 8 years and makes a great accompaniment to grilled meats, pizza or even a spicy sausage pasta!

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE ONE RED WINE AND ONE WHITE WINE WILL RECEIVE THE ABOVE WINE AND:
2014 CHAMP DIVIN – JURA CHARDONNAY – COTES DU JURA, FRANCE – Organic & Biodynamic
Fabrice and Valerie Closset-Gaziaux both have educational backgrounds in agronomy and earth sciences. After having spent extensive time working to develop sustainable farming practices in Africa and then helping growers in the Loire develop organic and naturally balanced vineyards for 8 years, they decided (in 2008) to procure vineyards in South-Revermont, in the “premier plateau” of Jura. They acquired land to grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Savagnin adhering to the principles of biodynamic farming practices. Jura, is a French wine region located between Burgundy and Switzerland. This cool climate wine region produces wines with some similarity to Burgundy and when you taste this delightful wine, you can absolutely taste them. The white selected for the month of May is a refreshing Chardonnay, hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks, then it undergoes malolactic fermentation to give it just a hint of buttery notes. Chill this wine to 45F and enjoy the delicate notes of jasmine, vanilla, golden apples, and Meyer lemons. The palate is treated to a rush of fresh yet delicate flavors of citrus, nectarine, and peaches, crisp acidity, with a lovely finish. This wine is delicious on a warm afternoon as an aperitif, or with a delicious meal of grilled scallops, asparagus with a butter sauce, or if dessert is your thing, try a pineapple tropical tort. Make this your new summer favorite wine, we couldn’t get enough of it!

WINE CLUB MEMBERS WHO CHOOSE 2 REDS, RECEIVE VISTALBA RED BLEND AND:
2011 EGUREN UGUARTE – “CINCUENTA” RIOJA – RIOJA, SPAIN
Rioja is a region in Spain with a long vinicultural history. Rioja has been growing grapes even before the Romans moved into the area. In more recent history, in the 80s, Spanish wines didn’t have a great reputation in the US but thanks to importers who truly cared about Spanish wines, they began to import more quality Spanish wines to our shores. Spain has more acreage planted than any other country in the world but does not produce in large numbers due to their high standards of quality, so much so that their attention to detail has been documented for centuries. In 1635, the Mayor of Logroño banned carriages from passing along the roads next to cellars "for fear that the vibration from these vehicles might affect the juice and the ageing of our precious wines". Eguren Ugarte winery was founded in 1870 by Anastasio Eguren in the Rioja territory of Basque Spain, and is a 140-year-old landmark family-owned winery known as one of the longest-standing vineyards in Europe. We are so delighted to introduce you to this gallant and special wine, the “Cincuenta” (fifty) which is a wine made specially to celebrate Victorino Eguren’s 50 years as the head of this winery. Made with 100% Tempranillo grapes with the final wine aged in both French and American oak barrels for 14 months and racked 3 times to give it that very smooth texture you’ll love. Finally, the unfiltered wine is allowed to rest 6 months in the bottle before release. This wine benefits from decanting at least ½ hour as it is intense upon opening. Notes of baked blueberries, plum and event toasted oak can be perceived in both the nose and the palate. Pair this wine with almost any kind of lamb dish from roast lamb to tender lamb cutlets grilled (a local favorite in the region) to slow braised lamb shank. If you prefer cheese, try a Manchego!

MEMBERS WHO CHOOSE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE CHAMP DIVIN JURA &:
GAZELA – VINHO VERDE – VINHO VERDE, PORTUGAL
The Vinho Verde is the largest Portuguese wine region. It is located in north-western Portugal and is home to white, reds, and rose wines. It is bordered to the north by the Minho, which separates Portugal from Spain’s Galicia, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the mountainous area separating it from the Douro region. It is here that this slightly fizzy wine is made. It is delicious, and while some argue that this style of wine is not what the region of Vinho Verde was intended for, we think whne you try it, you’ll love it too. This Vinho Verde is a blend of 40% Loureiro, 30% Pedernã, 15% Trajadura, 15% Azal, all native to the region, fermented in stainless steel tanks and are made effervescent with added CO2. This wine tastes like peaches, citrus, and tart pineapple with just a hint of sweetness. This wine is uncomplicated, refreshing and delicious! A great bargain and perfect for warm afternoons as it is only 9% alcohol. Serve well chilled in a flute or white wine glass and serve with light fish, salads or just as an aperitif!
