JUNE 2016 WINE CLUB WINES

JUNE 2016 WINE CLUB NOTES

WINE CLUB MEMBERS WHO RECEIVE (1 WHITE & 1 RED WINE) WILL ENJOY:
2015 HERDADE DO ROCIM – “MARIANA” WHITE – ALENTEJANO, PORTUGAL
In the seach for wine club wines, occasionally we run into brands where more than one wine hits all the right notes. Herdade do Rocim is such a winery. We had the pleasure of meeting Pedro Ribeiro, one of two winemakers at Herdade do Rocim, and as we sampled the wines, we knew we had many wines to share with our club members. Herdade do Rocim is located in the Lower Alentejo region in the southern Portugal. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Having fairly reliable weather combined with the large plots of available land equates to quality at an affordable price. It is thought to be the new world inside the old world, with wineries using a modern approach while respecting the terroir. The winemaking team is led by Pedro alongside winemaker Catarina Vieira, whose family has produced wines for many generations. The winery is run with sustainable and organic methods (although not certified)creating a project that gives value not only to Alentejo, but to Portugal as a whole. The line of wines selected for the wine club is called “Mariana”. The label Mariana was inspired by the love story between the nun Mariana Alcoforado from the Convent of Our Lady the Conception and the French gallant soldier, Marquis of Chamilly, who was in Portugal with his troops at the end of the Restoration War (17th Century). The love letters written by Mariana to her lover Chamilly were published in France in 1669 and became famous. Chamilly returned to his homeland, got married and was promoted to Marshall of France. Mariana lived until the age of 83 in seclusion and became known in history as Soror Mariana. The white blend is comprised of 60 % Antão Vaz, 30% Arinto, and 10% Alvarinho, with the first two grapes native to Alentejo, and the third having its origins in Spain (Albariño). The grapes are fermented in cold temperatures in stainless steel tanks to retain the crisp freshness that this wine carries. Chill this wine to 45F and enjoy the lovely notes of summer peaches, nectarines, mangos, Meyer lemons and a bit of lavender. The palate is crisp and refreshing with the citrus notes hitting the right places on your palate. The peaches and mango notes follow through with silky texture and acidity that carries the flavors way past after you have swallowed. This wine is a delicious choice for summer, whether you drink it by itself or pair it with white meats marinated with citrus or even a grilled asparagus or the difficult to pair artichoke. This wine is delicious and should be enjoyed young.

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE ONE WHITE WINE AND RED WINE WILL RECEIVE THE ABOVE WINE AND:
2014 HERDADE DO ROCIM – MARIANA VINHO TINTO – ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL
The red counterpart to white wine is made with 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), 20% Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera), and 10% Trincadeira, all farmed and treated biodynamically and organically (not certified). The grapes are destemmed before they are crushed and the juice is fermented in stainless steel barrels, then aged for 6 months in French oakbarrels. This wine is rich, with medium body, inviting notes of blackberries, black cherries, ripe black plums, and a touch of black pepper. The palate brings the same notes and the flavors will remind you of a Merlot with just a hint of spice at the end. This wine is ideal for a variety of occasions: barbeque, Sunday pasta, meats and hard cheeses. Serve this wine at 55-60 degrees (as should all red wines)to fully enjoy all it offers!

WINE CLUB MEMBERS WHO CHOOSE 2 REDS, RECEIVE MARIANA RED BLEND AND:
2012 DOMAINE LA TOUR PENEDESSES – “CUVEE ANTIQUE” RED BLEND – COTEAUX DU LANGUEDOC, FRANCE
Alexandre Fourque is the proud owner of the “Domaine La Tour de Penedesses” in the Languedoc region. With an impressive oenologist background, he worked for Clos Pegase, in Napa Valley. The wine represents an ecological niche and results in an extreme variety of aromas stemming from the Mediterranean shrubs which surround the clearings of vines: rosemary, thyme, wild mint, strawberry shrubs and lavender. Fourque is in favor of organic culture; it represents the only sanctuary in a wild life, and while this wine was made in an organic manner, like many small producers from France, they are not certified as such due to the costs of the certification. A total of 9 grapes and 5 Languedoc areas, including older vines are blended to make this wine: 65% Grenache (30 years), 25% Syrah (26 years), 5% Mourvedre (17 years), Aubun, Carignan, Cinsault, Tempranillo, Terrets Gris, Terrets Noir. Each varietal is vinified separately to keep its authenticity. 70% is aged in concrete vats; the rest in French oak barrels with a medium toasting to add complexity and allowed to age 8 months. This wine has a dark garnet color with delicious aromas of blackberry, cassis, violets, and a bit of clove. The wine has a medium body with the same fruit notes on the palate. This wine is well structured with ripe and silky tannins. This wine makes a great grilled red meat partner, vegetarian fare on the grill will pair nicely as well. Be sure to serve this wine between 55-60 degrees to truly enjoy it.

MEMBERS WHO CHOOSE TWO WHITE WINES RECEIVE CHAMP DIVIN JURA &:
2014 HUBER – “OBERE STEIGEN” GRUNER VELTLINER – TRAISENTAL DAC – AUSTRIA
The Huber family has wine growing roots dating back more than 220 years. The winery is located in the Traisental area, the smallest appellation in Austria but highly specialized in producing some of the finest Gruner Veltliner in Austria. The winery is in its 10th generation and is run by Markus Huber. Sustainable development, carefully controlling the harvest and meticulous pruning are the most natural and important prerequisites for their wine making techniques. The grapes are hand selected then crushed; allowed to remain with skin contact for 8 hours; pressed; then fermented in stainless steel for 4 months with the lees. This wine is crisp and clean with delicate notes of fresh limes, nectarines, green apples, fresh herbs like basil and rosemary. The palate follows through with apples, celery, bit of white pepper and delightful spiciness and herbs. This wine is a perfect aperitif or delicious with asparagus, vinaigrettes, or a soft cheese plate with a side of granny smith apples.
