2012 CANTINA FRENTANA- “RUBESTO” MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO RISERVA DOC
ABRUZZO, ITALY
The cooler weather has everyone craving those hearty reds and this wine answers that perfectly. But first, let’s clarify a common confusion, there are two wines that confuse people, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a red Italian wine made from the Montepulciano wine grape in the Abruzzo region of east-central Italy. It should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan wine made from Sangiovese and other grapes. According to grape experts, the Montepulciano grape may have originated in Tuscany which is why the confusion but it does not have connection to the Sangiovese grape. Therefore it seems to be an issue of linguistics. So now let’s talk about this delicious red and the winery that makes it. Cantina Frentana is located Frentana village, which lies south-east of the Apennine mountains near the historic city of Lanciano in the very heart of the Abruzzo wine producing region. Frentana was founded in the late fifties as a cooperative between local vineyards and selected wine growers to make wine with their collective wealth of historical knowledge about winemaking in the region. We think it paid off. This wine is made with 100% Montepulciano grapes from the best vineyards for the riserva bottling. After de-stemming, fermentation on the skins is done in stainless steel tanks for 10-15 days, then aged in large Slovakian oak barrels for at least 12 months and another six months in bottle before release. The wine is a beautiful blackberry color, on the nose it has complex notes of baking spices, black cherries, blackberries, and vanilla. We recommend that you decant this wine for at least ½ hour to truly enjoy the delicious flavors of blackberries, clove, pepper and black cherry. This wine will make s great companion to lamb, but also roast or braised veal and mature cheese. This wine will retail for $21.50

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE 1 RED WINE & 1 WHITE WINE WILL RECEIVE THE ABOVE WINE &:
2016 CASA MAGONI – CHARDONNAY VERMENTINO WHITE WINE
VALLE DE GUADALUPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Last year we introduced you to wines from Meixico, and just last month we featured a full lineup of wines from this up and coming region. Who knew that the oldest working winery outside of Europe is in Mexico? Yes, and founded in 1597 in the state of Cahu, which only tells us that Mexico has had a very long history in wine. Through tumultuous times winemaking has persevered and for the last 15 years it has thrived and will continue into the future. Let’s discover the winery that makes this month’s primary white wine. Casa Magoni is owned by the legendary winemaker Camilo Magoni who in the 1967 was hired by LA Cetto, Mexico’s largest winery to consult on their vineyards and wines. One trip and Camilo was smitten with the beauty and potential for wine that the Valle de Guadalupe had. By 1970, Camilo had become a full time resident of Baja and had begun what we now know as the modern era of winemaking in Baja. Camilo comes from Piedmonte, Italy and upon arriving in Baja realized that the terroir (weather and soil) were perfect for planning many Italian varietals. So much so that as of this writing, Camilo has 112 varietals growing successfully in Baja. And with that, he became very much a part of what Mexican winegrowers produce and learn from. Camilo is also the author of the only book, we found on winemaking, vines and the history in Baja. Educators of wine are now working on translating this book to English. So let’s talk about his delicious wine…a blend of Chardonnay (80%) and Vermentino (20%), the key thing to remember when drinking Mexican wines is that there are no rules…blends will be like nothing you have ever seen before, yet they will be delicious and that’s kind of the point. If it tastes great, you will see it under a Mexican label. The grapes for this wine were all fermented in stainless steel to enhance the freshness of both the varietals. On the nose, you will notice rich, aromatic notes of apricots, yellow apples, peaches, and even a hint of cinnamon. The palate is equally as inviting with the zippy acidity that rushes the apricot and apple flavors throughout your palate, delicious mineral notes and a lengthy finish. Our most loved comment from people that tried this wine was: “I don’t like Chardonnay but I like this wine.” So chill this wine to 45F, and pair it with anything from fish tacos to buttery Pasta Alfredo as cream or butter will make a delicious partner to this wine. This wine is versatile and delicious! $19.99

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVE TWO RED WINES RECEIVE THE RUBESTO MONTEPULCIANNO&:
2014 CATENA ZAPATA – “LA CONSULTA” MALBEC
LA CONSULTA APPELATION - MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

Bodega Catena Zapata is a family-owned winery located in Mendoza, in the sub appellation of Agrelo, Argentina. The winery is well known as the “Mayan Building” for its structure resembling a Mayan pyramid. The winery was started in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena and was passed to his son Domingo. Domingo’s son, Nicolás Catena Zapata (A.K.A. Nicolás Catena), was one of the first to introduce European winemaking techniques to Argentina and pioneered Malbec and vine growing in high altitudes. Today Nicolás Catena’s daughter, Laura Catena, and other members of the Zapata family are at the helm of this iconic winery. Their Malbecs are known to many who love the varietal and have made appearances in cult circles, and so we bring you this delicious Malbec as your secondary red. We think that you, like we, will love it. This wine is made with 100% Malbec grapes blended from vineyards of La Consulta district in San Carlos. The result is a wine with a pure expression of a unique terroir. 35-year-old vines give red and black fresh fruits flavors, sweet texture and character. Cold nights lend bright, crisp acidity and the intense sunshine gives explosive floral aromatics and concentrated structure. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak for 12 months with additional 10 months aging in bottle before release. Decant this wine for about ½ hour, serve at cellar temperature (60F), and enjoy the dark violet color with deep purple tones. The nose offers aromas like red fruit and ripe, concentrated dark berries with fresh herbs and floral notes like lavender and violets, some traces of vanilla and tobacco. The mouth feel is rich, with raspberries and blueberries, spice notes and a touch of mocha. The finish presents soft and well structured tannins with bright, crisp acidity that gives the wine exceptional length. Pair this wine with beef tenderloin. $22.00

2015 PRATSCH – GRUNER VELTLINER – CERTIFIED ORGANIC & VEGAN
NEIDEROSTERREICH, AUSTRIA

Pratsch is a relatively small estate comprisedof 13 single vineyards in the Niederosterreich region (Lower Austria). All maintained under certified organic certification since 1995 by the Pratsch family. Wilhelm and Anneliese and their son, Stefan, make use of green methods to grow and harvest grapes of the highest quality and keep the winery in pristine condition. The grapes are transported in small crates to the winery, where they are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel, very-low temperature fermentations, frequently under a blanket of inert gas, to guarantee the most intense varietal aromatics remain in the wines. All of this attention to detail and dedication to the purity of the land by Stefan and the Pratsch family is translated directly into the quality of the wines and are a true reflection of their philosophy. The grapes for this liter of Gruner Veltliner (yes, you get a whole liter) are all fermented in stainless steel tanks and allowed to age with the lees for 4 months, giving it that rich note on the nose and on the palate. This wine is aromatic to the hills with notes of granny smith apples, savory herbs, and peaches. The palate is pure with mineral-infused flavors supported by firm acidity with a spicy finish. Gruner is the wine of choice when enjoying hard to pair foods like artichokes, asparagus, or if you like cheese, try a goat cheese with herbs. $15.99
